Meet Geneva Hodges of Geneva Stone Modern Buttercream Cakes in Corona

Today we’d like to introduce you to Geneva Hodges.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I began baking when I was very young. In 2013 I graduated from the Culinary Institute of America with a degree in baking/pastry arts & have been working in the industry ever since. I went through various positions at places such as The SLS Hotel in Beverly Hills & Susiecakes Bakery. All while simultaneously taking side orders & clients from home. About two years ago, I decided to go all in on my own business, specializing in modern styled buttercream wedding cakes. I am a certified cottage food vendor doing everything from my home.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road has been fulfilling but quite long and exhausting at times. Incredibly long hours. For many years I would begin my days at 4AM at whatever full-time pastry position I held, come home, & continue to work on my personal client orders, many days until midnight, and then start all over again. All while simultaneously trying to keep up with social media platforms, which I consider a job in itself, and normal everyday life.

Please tell us about Geneva Stone Modern Buttercream Cakes.
I specialize in modern style buttercream cakes. In particular, wedding cakes, but I also cater to birthdays and other special occasions. My cakes are TALL! Honestly, the tallest I’ve seen, at least in my surrounding area. It gives them an elegant and sleek look that I’m truly obsessed with. I focus solely on having sharp buttercream edges, real flowers for decor, and fun additions such as gold leaf or ganache drips. I’m proud that I’ve been able to do this on my own, aside from my husband who assists in deliveries. I truly feel that after years of practice & repetition, I offer a top tier product that is delicious & beautiful.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Definitely not. Every night of crying on the kitchen floor has been worth it. I’ve learned so much & grown not only as a business owner but a human being. Every hiccup or sleep-deprived night has been an opportunity to learn & grow.
