Today we’d like to introduce you to Gavin Maxwell.
Gavin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I discovered calisthenics back in 2016 when I went out to Santa Monica Muscle beach for the first time, and I immediately fell in love with the sport and the atmosphere. Since then, I have graduated from the University of Oregon and moved to Venice, California. I started the West Coast Warriorz back in 2016 with a group of friends that shared the same passion for calisthenics. Since then, we have become one of the most well-known and established teams in the world. Not only do we compete at a national and international level, but more recently we have been promoting bodyweight fitness to the public. Not only does it get you in shape, but it is more about the feeling you get from controlling and ultimately, mastering your physical body.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
As an athlete, it is a constant struggle with my body battling injuries. Not only do our palms frequently rip open from excess bar usage, but I’ve had to deal with rotator cuff injuries, wrist injuries, and even a split thumb.
As a team, the biggest obstacle is that we all have our own personal lives and live somewhat far apart. Especially with Coronavirus, we haven’t regrouped as a full team in a very long time. Just like everyone else, we have had to cancel competitions, travel plans, and team gatherings due to COVID 19.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with West Coast Warriorz – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
We specialize in teaching people calisthenics online. While there are many at-home bodyweight workouts you can find at home, our workouts train you to MASTER your physical body.
Elite calisthenics combines pure bodyweight strength with certain elements of gymnastics and circus training with freestyle elements from break dancing and parkour. As complete amateurs once and now a recognized group of trainers and athletes, we know exactly what kind of exercises and methods should be used to go from 0 to 100. In our training program WarriorFIT, we provide people with this knowledge in an easy follow along with training style.
In the very near future, we are also coming out with a complete planche mastery guide. A planche is one of the most desired bodyweight moves as it symbolizes ultimate strength. For those who don’t know, a planche when you hold yourself off the ground with your hands under your hips with straight arms and your feet are floating off the floor. Think of a pushup position with your feet off the ground. It is a very hard skill to achieve as most people require years to learn this to hold themselves in the position. We are coming out with the most in-depth online planche class with some follow-along workouts, progressive exercises, and training programs.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Hosting more competitions in Venice, more online content, traveling and connecting with the global community, and impacting the lives of people- particularly young children, right here in our city.
