Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabriela Alvarez.
Hi Gabriela, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started GabulousLA about five years ago with a dream. Back then, I sold trendy fashion jewelry. Still, I quickly realized I wanted to create something with more purpose and quality, jewelry that people could wear daily, that wouldn’t tarnish, and that would make them feel beautiful and confident. As a DACA recipient and daughter of immigrants, I built my brand from the ground up with limited resources but endless determination. What started as a side hustle has now turned into my full-time passion. A Latina-owned brand that celebrates individuality, quality, and culture through every piece.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Starting a business from the ground up as a DACA recipient has presented numerous challenges, including limited access to resources and funding, as well as the need to learn through trial and error. There were moments when sales were slow, I doubted myself, and felt like giving up. But those challenges taught me resilience and reminded me why I started — to build something meaningful and to show others like me that it’s possible to chase your dreams, no matter your circumstances.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about GabulousLA?
GabulousLA is a Latina- and DACA-owned jewelry brand based in California that creates high-quality, hypoallergenic, and tarnish-free pieces made to be lived in. Every design is inspired by culture, confidence, and everyday moments — from our statement hoops to our delicate charm necklaces, each piece tells a story.
We specialize in 18k gold-filled jewelry that’s made to last — waterproof, sweat-proof, and perfect for daily wear. What sets us apart is not only the quality of our materials but the heart behind every collection. I pour my story into this brand — being an immigrant, a dreamer, and someone who believes jewelry should make you feel confident, beautiful, and seen.
I’m most proud of the community that has grown around GabulousLA. My customers — whom I call my “Gabulous babes” — have become like family. Whether they shop online or visit me at local pop-ups, they’re part of the reason I keep creating. I want readers to know that GabulousLA isn’t just a jewelry brand; it’s a reflection of resilience, creativity, and love. Every piece is made with intention, meant to be worn through life’s special moments.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
What makes me happy is creating, setting up my pop-up booth, or seeing someone light up when they try on a GabulousLA piece for the first time. I find so much joy in knowing their Gabulous pieces have become part of someone’s special moment — a birthday, a trip, or just their everyday look.
I’m also happiest when I’m surrounded by my loved ones — my family, my friends, and the community that’s supported me through every step. As a DACA recipient, every milestone feels even more meaningful. I don’t take any of it for granted. The simple things — like having coffee with my mom before a market, hearing a customer share how confident my jewelry makes them feel — those are the moments that fill my heart.
