Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabriel Acosta.

Gabriel Acosta

Hi Gabriel, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
6 years ago, I started out of curiosity to explore an old camera that belonged to my father; in a time without smartphones, I decided that I was going to use my free time to take photographs and carry the camera with me all the time.

As the years passed, I discovered my passion for art and photography, that’s how I decided that I wanted to explore the world. This change make realize that the camera not only an object that satisfy me in my moments of boredom, my camera is also an accompaniment to a lifestyle that consists of exploring the world and appreciate its gifts.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
“One day at a time” is the phrase that determines how my path has been; sometimes when you think about all the long road involved in learning a skill or making a goal in your career, everything can seem difficult and unattainable.

To do this, I focused on learning and doing different things every day, so every day is a new opportunity to be able to create and search for what we are looking for. When you least expect it, you are already far ahead in your goals and do something that, at some point, I considered distant or impossible.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar with what you do, what can you tell them about what you do?
I describe myself as an artist, although my main tool is my cameras and images. As an artist, I dedicate myself to exploring the visual curiosities of my life and seeking inspiration around me. Taking photographs, collages, and photobooks are one of my favorite things.

My friends describe me as a “Minimalist-Maximilist” who is nostalgic for the past, I think the peculiarities of my work are in seeking those conversations between nostalgia, the past and the uncertain. I look for this in my self-portraits, collages, and photographs.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
The world was changing rapidly, one of the topics that has had the most progress and relevance in recent years is AI, I would like to see what new developments could incorporate this into the world of photography. I am also always aware of what new developments are launched in the photographic market. I find it very interesting to explore to what extent we can achieve perfection in images.

I see the industry of photography and art in an uncertain future since there are more and more tools and it is easier to create images, I feel that in the future knowing how to be realistic and be creative will be the main skills for anyone who wants to make a living from this. I think that maybe people can start to develop a taste for seeing, making, and wanting more analogous and handmade art. Technological perfection with the over-saturation of images may change public perception in the coming decades.
