Today we’d like to introduce you to Fulton Washington Jr.
Fulton, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Well, the idea of a career choice started off rocky. When I was a young kid, my father told me the most successful people in the world provide a service and create a system for it to run on its own. And they all have some things in common, and that is investments and property. With gaining that knowledge, I spent a lot of time trying to figure out what type of service I would want to provide.
This led me to trying to figure myself out, and the things I enjoyed most in life. Although some may see it as cliche, but the thing I truly enjoy most is helping others. I can honestly say I find joy in seeing others smile from something I helped them with or provided. That mindset led me to holding multiple jobs that provided a significant service to my surrounding community. From Security Officer/Supervisor to EMT, to Phlebotomist, to Ambulance Dispatcher, and even a host of guest services positions at places like the Staples Center, etc…
With me having had many jobs, I still didn’t know exactly what I wanted in life. I found out that the thing I wanted most in life is financial freedom through obtaining real estate. This moved me to look into getting licensed as a Realtor. After years of self-doubt, procrastination, and putting myself last I finally found the courage to check out some real estate schools.
In December of 2018 at the ripe age of 30, I finally made the choice to check into school to obtain my license. I became a licensed Realtor in April of 2019. Yesss!!!
I immediately started to contact everyone I knew to let them know I have a service that I can provide, and I have the knowledge to assist them. Within the first three months, I closed my first commercial deal as a Realtor. Shortly after, I closed my 2nd commercial lease. It was safe to say I was off to a fast start to close two commercial deals within the first five months of becoming licensed, and It feels great doing something I consider to be my passion.
Helping someone find a space for their business or their next home in my consideration is the ultimate gift or service. Not to mention this service provides the needs and wants for myself and my family.
Has it been a smooth road?
Although my road thus far has been pretty smooth due to my years of preparation, I have also had some struggles in the past and present.
When I first became licensed my biggest struggle was being able to accept denial. Being able to get on the phone lines to make calls on my leads were my most intense obstacle. I had a huge fear of not knowing what to say, sounding incompetent over the phone, and not being able to answer all the questions I created for myself in my own head. I’ve learned since then that a great leader/individual accepts defeat as well as a win.
As I began to get more comfortable speaking, I also learned that every one of my mistakes made me much more knowledgeable in my craft. I’m not saying I know EVERYTHING, but I have learned how to acknowledge it and let my clients know I will get the correct answers to their questions as soon as possible.
Some of my struggles have been having some of my offers out bid by large corporations that have more to offer, and even losing clients due to lack of experience. Both very common in the lives of Realtors.
Ultimately, I didn’t let that define the direction nor trajectory I choose my career to have. By consistently focusing on learning more about my craft, keeping in contact with my clients, and staying up to date with my markets analysis, my business has grown tremendously in the past year. By me creating the systems my father mentioned to me years ago, I plan on my business growing a lot larger in the years to come.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I work as a Realtor® for CENTURY 21 Union Realty located in Torrance, California. CENTURY 21 Union Realty is a family-owned business which has specialized in and grown with many distinguished communities in the area. Located in the heart of the South Bay for over 40 years, CENTURY 21 Union Realty has enjoyed the powerful community recognition built upon our trademark of personalized service to the many families moving in and out of the area.
I specialize in Commercial and Residential Real Estate leasing/sales.
The thing I am most proud of is the longevity and consistency of CENTURY 21. This is one of the many reasons I chose to associate myself with this company. I believe the perception from the public of the company in addition to the knowledge of the agent has a ton to do with clients choosing a Realtor. There is no company that has left a larger footprint in the field of real estate.
Some things I feel that set me apart from most other Realtors is my ability negotiate and identify key leverage points and exploiting them. I feel negotiations are an extremely vital point in securing the right space or property for my clients at the best price possible! Without knowing your leverage points makes it extremely difficult to negotiate.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Over the next 5-10 years, I definitely see my industry growing, and more specifically in my particular niche of commercial real estate. I specifically chose to focus a large majority of my attention to commercial real estate due to the growing number of business owners within my community. With the number of business owners growing at an alarming rate, I figured these same owners need a dedicated and proven professional to assist them in growing their business, and why not me?
I see commercial real estate eventually being the catalyst to drive our economy to points ever traveled before, and I plan on being one of the trailblazers to introduce new ideas and new concepts of business to the practice. By being consistent, staying relevant, and continuing to focus client acquisition and retention my business will be one of the driving forces within the industry.
