Meet Oliver Bou Eid

Today we’d like to introduce you to Oliver Bou Eid.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Oliver. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I entered the world of filmmaking as a Director.  I was amazed by the fields of Visual Effects and CGI, so I worked so hard on myself to deepen my knowledge in those fields in addition to cinematography. Therefore, I pursued my studies in cinematography in Los Angeles and attended many courses and conferences in Germany to enhance my capacities in animation and visual effects. I’m best known for my work on Movie intros and commercials (TV ads).

I began working on commercials with esteemed agencies and international companies residing in the MENA region such as Redbull, Mcdonald’s, Coca-cola,…etc. My famous work in the fields of VFX, 3D animation and Virtual Reality pushed many production houses to collaborate with me to create their state of the art projects.

Has it been a smooth road?
Being a filmmaker, a cinematographer & a Visual Effects Artist at the same time is tough, however, having knowledge in those fields strengthens my experience and my work in the digital media field. There is quite a difference between those three jobs, being a filmmaker is understanding scripts, creating ideas and transforming them into reality, meanwhile being a cinematographer is painting with light, following new camera updates, and bringing emotion to every frame while working with the director. However, being a VFX artist is achieving realistic and believable effects on movie shots and always staying up to date to the latest software, computers… etc!

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I’m specialized in Cinematography & Visual Effects. I am known for my abilities to create beautiful movie intros in CGI with nice lighting and camera movements, as I am known for doing high-quality commercials & corporate videos for many companies and agencies, whether it is live-action &/or fully animated output.

Being a cinematographer and a VFX artist at the same time sets me apart from others. First of all, as a VFX artist, I will have the touch of the cinematographer to render an outstanding output and to let the audience feel as if the fully animated movie is real. Second of all, as a cinematographer, I have the abilities of the VFX artist on set, so if the project were a live-action that needs VFX, I know how to film the shots for post-production. Those abilities helped me win many awards for my latest work as a cinematographer on Ghirardelli chocolate commercial that was included in many festivals in LA such as LAFA, Top Shorts, etc….

My Sci-Fi short film Ercevax 2014 that I directed also got selected in many festivals around the world like CERN laboratories in Switzerland, Beijing film academy in China… etc. As a freelancer, I’m really proud that I’m working with many big & international brands like Marriott hotels, Redbull, Macdonald’s, Coca-Cola… etc.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
LA is definitely the right place to work in the digital media field. Every director needs a cinematographer and a VFX artist to help him finalize his movie. I believe that if you are multi-talented, many directors will hire you, and if you are a cinematographer, editor & CG artist at the same time, they will definitely do.
