Today we’d like to introduce you to Lotus Lain.
Lotus, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I needed to live my truth after having given birth. I realized I’m raising a kid with the idea that they can grow up to be everything they want to be and like a hypocrite, I had not done that for myself yet. I’ve always been a sexual person. I’ve always been interested in exploring unknowns. I entered the adult industry at age 30, as a Dirty 30 Bday Gift to myself in 2012. Since I’ve also always wanted to help people, I saw an opportunity to continue advocating for the rights of the industry. So in late 2017 I took my focus there while still performing. I write, I direct, produce, network, connect people to each other & resources and I love it!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Well, I’m an older Black lady in an industry where youthful whiteness is top-billed. So there have definitely been challenges. I’ve not been lucky enough to have had supportive romantic partners although I’ve always had the support of parents & my child. It’s been a cool, fun & unique challenge navigating my super sex-charged life around raising a kid. I always say my bestie, Ana Foxxx & I are like the characters from the British TV show, Absolutely Fabulous except with weed instead of alcohol & the particularly serious child of the main character is much like my own.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
On the advocacy side of my career, I’m the Industry Relations Advocate at FSC. It’s a position I created for myself in late 2017 to act as a liaison between performers, production companies & FSC’s board of directors to address what the industry’s concerns or needs may be. We’re the only trade organization for the industry. There’s no union. Any attempts at unionizing have been shoddy, shady & half ass attempts at collecting government money. I’m most proud of the INSPIRE program I launched in 2018, it stands for Industry Newcomer Support Program, which is expanding further into webinars to help new performers understand a lot of the online work we must now perform in the pandemic shutdown. I’m also currently working with leaders of The Center For Cultural Power on issues of sexual representation in media and in policy. On the performance side of my career, I’m known for my BDSM work, Domme work, lesbian & bisexual videos. I’m most proud of my recent starring role in feature film, Chemistry Eases the Pain & my 1st professional producing gig for Erika Lust Productions, titled Estate Sale Pleasure Hunt. I think what makes me different from other performers is that I’m very genuinely me; a 38 year old real-life milf, who’s cute enough & young enough looking to still do porn.
What were you like growing up?
I’ve literally always been interested in sex. I told kids in summer school between 1st & 2nd grades what “doing it” meant. I used to tell made up stories about seeing boobies in changing rooms to my lesbian cousin. I used to masturbate to my dad’s Playboy’s while singing “Part of That World” from Disney’s version of The Little Mermaid at the same time. But I was actually shy up until jr high. I was always smart & I got called “dictionary” because I used large words when I spoke, which wasn’t often. I finally told someone to “shut up” in the 8th grade, which shocked everybody & I’ve been speaking up for myself ever since. Even though I’ve always been smart enough to be in classes like in all GATE, Honors & AP, that world of sober, serious, stoicism in intellectualism never ever appealed to me. I thought if I have to go to college & end up at a career with these goons (the kids in my AP classes) then I was not gonna participate in that system. I was always a little bit insecure about my body as well. I didn’t grow up with healthy eating habits which contributed to feelings of inadequacy. My best friends in HS had boyfriend’s, they were cheerleaders & wore clothing sizes 0 & 2. While I was in the Associated Student Body, Black Student Union and had no boyfriend’s ever until age 19. I wore clothing size 12 in HS— but supposedly I “carried it well” was what was always told to me. I secretly idolized Lil Kim, because she was so unapologetically hardcore, but that’s not so much of a secret anymore!
