Today we’d like to introduce you to Frankie Yang.
Frankie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve started off dancing back in high school because it was therapy and an escape for me. Growing up living with my father and other two siblings my father always told me get a secure job and I did so I changed my major to Auto Collision, they offered me $17 an hr in Tulsa, Oklahoma to stand in one spot for 10 hrs a day four days a week painting tractor parts. I thought to myself, I could get myself a new BMW and a house within three years if I work here. Is a BMW worth three years of my life? I’m not going to waste my youth painting tractor parts. What else makes me happy that can give me a purpose? Acting! of course! entertainment!
With that desire I went with my heart, saved up money within a year working as a waiter and right before I took off to LA, Jan 28th, 2016 my house got broken into and my camera gear was stolen. It was a very emotional period of my life asking God, “why me?! I don’t deserve to get my gear stolen! I worked so hard to get here! why why why me!?? And I realize this was only the speed bump in my journey in LA. A week in serving and trying to find gigs as an actor was nothing seems to be working. And remember someone saying to me “ask and you shall receive”. I decided to make a gofundme to see if anyone is willing to help and within a day my supporters funded me about $2,800 to get my gear back. Wow, from there I started to film more skits and got more into visual storying telling.
Fast forward three years, I work full time as a freelancer as content creator. I’ve recently quit my job June 28th, 2019 to work for myself. Right now, I have two running businesses Frankie Mir Visuals and my Airbnb. Working my 9-5 job was mentally draining and took a lot of time of my hands. I rather be struggling for my happiness than comfortable with my money. My goal is connect with my audience through storytelling.
Visually speaking. I started storytelling through dancing.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Your body is like a vehicle, its was built to go smooth and as artist you have to take paths that no else sees or approve because it was not safe and those are the roughest darkest roads to take knowing that you might get a flat tire on the way is part of your journey and you fix the problem and keep going.
One of my flat tire in my journey was when LA just passed a LAW where it affected one of my main source of income. My traveling trips were delayed, time took its toll, my sister was visiting me, financially I’m screwed, it was emotionally and mentally draining because it delayed my schedule. but it’s ok. It’s just a speed bump.
