Today we’d like to introduce you to Federico Vaona.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born in Milan in 1973 and started to play piano at the age of six. Around 1982 my father Danilo Vaona (music composer and producer too) built a personal recording studio at home and it was my greatest lucky space to spend time with music and sound, specially instrumental electronic music with synthesizers. At the age of 14, I composed my first instrumental theme for a TV show in Italy and from that moment, I understood that music with computers would be my life forever. I started to compose instrumental music by using an Atari 1040ST with C-Lab Notator and connecting all synthesizers with it and recording all with an analog AKAI 1212 mixer straight to a tape cassette. Wonderful years, experimenting all the afternoon time everyday after school was something really exciting for me and full of enormous experience with music and sound.
My biggest step was learning the art of composing songs and themes for TV with my father. Lot of experience in the music industry with passion and hard work, understanding the real music studio life. I can say I am really lucky to be involved in TV shows and artists for many years because the training and the experience is something extraordinary with music. Today working with the knowledgement of blending music with sound and video in studio is a powerful tool, essential for a producer. And now my big passion of making music for films becomes essential in my multimedia career. There’s no limits today. With technology, if used well, we can do whatever we want.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Music life is a hard road. You have to be very objective to understand what a film director or TV show producer exactly wants. You can compose a beautiful melody, but it has to fit perfectly with the image. If not, you can make the biggest mistake. To me the image of a film or a TV series gives the idea of how to compose. Not the inverse. I can write and be inspired from ideas, colors or pictures. But at the end, the real proof is the dynamic of the image when it runs with music.
Passion is always my energy. I can’t do my work without passion. This is not a 9 to 5 work. You can perfectly stay in the studio by working 14 or 16 hours per day. Everyday is a work in progress. My work is based on a result, and that result has to be great to satisfy the big energy and risk that a director or a producer spend in this industry.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Biggest mentor to me is my father Danilo Vaona. I learn work and life with him and with my family. Together we do the best team in our work. Raffaella Carrá (Italian singer, dancer and television presenter), Maria Teresa Campos (television presenter), and Europroducciones Group Company did a big role in my career. The experience with them was unparalleled on working in a very professional way. Today director Keith Sutliff with KS Pictures opens to me a new great path in the film industry.
