Today we’d like to introduce you to Faritza Chavarria.
Hi Faritza, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am an artist. I was born and raised in Montebello, California. My art journey began when I was a child. During the time I was in elementary school, my dad would take over my school projects that required creativity since I didn’t know how to do anything artistic. I would sit down with him, see him draw, and that is when I became inspired by his talent for me to start drawing. I also became interested in makeup at a very young age just by seeing my mother get ready every morning. The application of makeup always fascinated me. When I was in junior high school In the 6th grade I had done drawings for various school projects and received an art award certificate for outstanding achievement at Montebello Intermediate School on June 19, 2003. These experiences from my childhood laid the foundation to start my journey as an artist.
Creativity was common in my household, and I went from watching my parents expressing themselves to wanting to be creative myself. I have a fond memory of my childhood a time back then when I was in my room coloring my barbies hair with blue and pink highlighters. Most of the barbies had blonde hair, and I wanted one that was different. I was always doing something creative, whether it be coloring barbies hair or drawing clothes. As I got older, I would dedicate my time to drawing and painting, developing my skills as an artist, which led to art classes in high school. That is when I started to take my craft seriously. I had my art displayed in galleries on April 11, 2009 during my senior year of high school I received a certificate of congressional recognition award from U.S representative Grace F. Napolitano for my participation in the 38th Congressional Art Competition for high school students winning the “judges choice” award for a still life drawing I submitted.
Throughout the years, I realized that creating art was my passion and was something I wanted to keep doing for the rest of my life. I was taking drawing classes, painting classes, entering art contests, and placing my art in galleries. I was doing this full-time. Fast forward to finishing high school and going straight to college. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life or how to earn money doing what I love for a living. I have always been the type of person to go after their dreams, and making art wasn’t a hobby for me it was my calling. So, I went to college and continued doing what I love. I thrive in creativity. I love drawing, painting, photography, makeup, fashion, interior decorating, DIY’s, and graphic design. I have explored all these different types of art and have incorporate them in my daily life. From 2009 to 2015, the college courses I was taking were drawing, watercolor, acrylic, and oil painting classes, photography, graphic design, and in 2011, I started doing Halloween makeup. In 2016, I graduated from a community college got my associate’s degree in arts graphic communication.
The following year, I was doing internships to gain work experience in print design. Since the beginning of 2023, I have gone through many changes in all aspects of my life. One of them being that I had dyed my hair teal. This bold move reminded me of the time I was a child coloring Barbie’s hair with highlighters. My hair color is a representation of me as an artist. Even though I made drastic changes in my life, one of the things I never lost was my creativity and my desire to still keep creating art. Today, I work at a digital advertising agency doing graphic design. As an adult, I am lucky to have created my life doing what I love. Three decades have passed me by, and I am still the highly creative, multi-faceted, talented, passionate, and self-motivated artist I was always meant to be.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My art journey has not been a smooth road, but it’s been something I have worked at for years. I still have not figured out what my niche is or what my style of art is so it has been challenging. It is also difficult trying to make a career out of it since it’s saturated with people trying to do what you’re doing.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am currently a graphic designer. I create restaurant menus, flyers, ads, GMBs, business cards, and logos. I also do various different art like photography and Halloween makeup. I am mainly proud of creating all the different types of art besides drawing and painting. What sets me apart from other artists is that I have gained many different skills for more than 18 years in the creative field that makes me a valuable candidate for any company looking for someone that can do more than one creative project. I have always wanted to be a well-rounded artist that is the go-to person for anything art related.
