Meet Eva Heugenhauser

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eva Heugenhauser.

Hi Eva, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Since I can remember, my dream was to follow my passion for creating and making. After finishing school, I could finally pursue this goal and did my BA in Fashion Design in Germany, a school with a strong focus on tailoring and patternmaking. Afterward, I gained work experience while interning abroad before I started my Master’s Degree in Fashion Design at Parsons School of Design in New York City. After graduation, I happily accepted a job offer as Patternmaker Assistant at Thom Browne.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
In general, it was very smooth – I got accepted at both my BA and MFA studies right at the first try of application. Also, after my graduation, I am very grateful that I got my dream job within a few months. However, it was definitely not easy – I spent so many years working hard during my studies, spending every single day in the studio, long hours and no breaks. I had to constantly remind myself to keep fighting and sacrifice a lot of personal time in order to get to where I am today.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am working as a patternmaking specializing in tailoring. Which means I basically construct blueprints for garments – almost like an architect for clothing. What I love so much about patternmaking is that it is a very specific craft that requires the highest precision and attention to detail. It is a skill set I will develop and improve constantly for the rest of my career.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I kind of knew my passion since I can remember. Not specifically patternmaking maybe, but just in general making and creating. I spend all my free time drawing, sewing and crafting. I am so happy that I could turn my biggest hobby into my profession today.
