Meet Ernest D. Kim of Back on Point Wellness in Bellflower

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ernest D. Kim.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Ernest. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am a chiropractor and a 2nd generation acupuncturist. I grew up eating organic foods and herbal supplements long before it was cool. As a kid, my father made me eat Gorilla Crunch cereal which tasted so much more bland than the sugary and more popular, Captain Crunch cereal. I told myself I was going to be bigger and better than my father. Growing up, I was always the tallest yet skinniest kid in the classroom. I guess taking all the herbs affected my height in a positive way. But I hated how skinny I was, so in high school I got really serious into working out at the gym. I also took boxing classes and wanted to be fit and strong. As I began learning more about the fitness world, I realized very quickly how important nutrition was in addition to working out. It turns out everything my father had given me to eat as a kid were exactly the foods I needed in order to reach my goals. From this point, I was fascinated with anything holistic – nutrition, exercise, meditation, alternative healing, etc… My freshmen year in college, I threw my back out severely. I woke up and I couldn’t get out of bed. I was terrified. Somehow, I managed to get to the ER. The doctor prescribed me with painkillers and referred me to a physical therapist who was available immediately. She stretched me out and gave me some massage and I was able to walk back to my dorm. Although I was still in a great deal of pain, I couldn’t believe the relief I felt from the massage and I was shocked at how little the doctor could help me. Shortly after, I enrolled in massage therapy school and started practicing as a massage therapist while finishing up college. I continued to receive a lot of massage therapy, chiropractic and acupuncture treatments to manage my low back pain. Upon graduating college as a psychology major, I knew I wanted to do something related to the mind and body. Still wanting to be different from my father, I resisted the idea of studying acupuncture but all of my mentors kept pointing me in that direction. I couldn’t ignore the signs anymore and after talking with my father, he suggested I study both acupuncture and chiropractic as a dual degree program that was being offered at Southern California University of Health Sciences. The idea of practicing both Western and Eastern philosophies of medicine and being able to utilize my psychology degree seemed to be the ultimate expression of what I wanted to do and the rest is history!

Has it been a smooth road?
Going through the dual degree program was one of the most challenging feats I’ve accomplished in my life. I would take chiropractic classes during the day then take acupuncture classes at night. On most days, I would be in class from 8am to 9pm. Upon coming home from classes, I would still have to study an additional 3-5 hours.

Ironically, this period was the least healthy I’ve ever been in my life. I was so stressed out, eating terrible, and hardly getting any sleep. I contemplated dropping out of school many times. I burned out my adrenals and my cortisol levels dipped much lower than normal levels.  After I graduated from school, I had this idea that I would work at my father’s office and have an easy transition into a full-time practice. Wrong. My father being the old school generation he grew up in, started me off at minimum wage and treated me as if I was still an intern and did so in front of patients! After about three years of doing this, I decided to open up my own practice. Looking back on it, I realized the humility and professionalism he was instilling in me and I am very grateful for that experience.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
And lastly, Wellness includes our many other services including massage therapy, active release technique, mobile personal training, nutritional counseling, alkaline and antioxidant water, and life coaching. Without the team that makes up Back on Point Wellness, we would be non-existent. I am so proud of each team member and I wholeheartedly believe in their genuine desire to serve the community.  I am so confident that people will feel the love and healing energy the moment they walk through our doors. This is what separates us from other offices. Our patients come to us for healing, and they leave with an extended family.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Bellflower is a slowly growing city with many thriving small businesses. If someone was starting out, this would be a great place to start as there aren’t a lot of chiropractors or acupuncturists here. Other cities are overcrowded with wellness centers but Bellflower is still a relatively hidden gem. I have grown to enjoy this city very much these last few years.
