Today we’d like to introduce you to Erlinda Montano-Hiscock.
Erlinda, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where the rich colors of the land, the vibrant skies, myths and stories, set the tone for my artist’s path. As a free-spirited young woman, I found my second home in Big Sur, a place renowned for its artists, poets, writers, and free thinkers. Here I met and traveled the world with Jazz pianist Michel Petrucciani, with whom I had the beautiful opportunity to be immersed in music and art for a few years. The next chapter of my life brought my sweet husband, and together we raised our two children on our 5 acres of woodsy mountains. It was also during this time that I met my painting teacher and began my Painter’s quest. We now share our time between Baja, Big Sur, and Kauai, with always a yearly visit to touch my feet to my New Mexico soil. There is the never-ending beauty and mystery of our earth, flora and fauna, dreams and visions to fuel my art. It keeps me steady, grounded, and with my head in the clouds, all at the same time. Exactly where I like to be.
Has it been a smooth road?
It’s a challenge to make time for art and to make a living at it, but I do whatever I need to do in order to continue on my path. Sometimes that’s having a day job, or making a studio in a greenhouse, or saying “do not disturb!”.
Please tell us more about your art.
I’m known for my vibrant, expressionist landscape paintings. I don’t just paint what I see, I paint the layers of experiences I’ve had with the land. My relationship it.
I’d like for people to know more of my soul paintings, where I open myself to dreams, memories, and psychic visions. These paintings tell stories, and can often bring healing messages. They unfold and speak to me as I paint them, surprising me with images and information.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I would like to see more galleries opening, featuring fresh and local art. Right now, I have my work ar Coast in Big Sur and also at our pop up gallery at Loma Vista in Big Sur.
