Meet Erika Icon of The Rub PR

Today we’d like to introduce you to Erika Icon.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Erika. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
After years of working in advertising as a copywriter and art director, I was mentally and physically exhausted, and literally felt like all of my creativity was being sucked out of me. I knew it was time for a change. Looking through employment ads on Craig’s List in 2005, I found an ad for WantedList, the adult version of Netflix, looking for a DVD buyer. While I was working there, Shane’s World (one of my vendors) asked me to do their PR on a freelance basis. I enjoyed it and ended up leaving WantedList to go work for two other studios as a full-time publicist. While working there, I decided to start my own PR company. At first, I only had a few clients, so I supplemented my income writing for AVN, XBIZ, and an herbal supplement company. Twelve years later, my business has doubled and tripled many times over, and we are known as one of the top adult PR firms.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Building a business is never smooth—there are always ups and downs. It takes time to build a reputation as a publicist that has connections, produces results, and helps build careers. In the beginning, we worked with anyone who would hire us, and some were difficult or ones we wouldn’t necessarily choose. Now, we decide who we work with. We work with top adult stars and up and comers, as well as studios and other adult-oriented companies.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Rub PR – what should we know?
We have three employees and specialize in working in the adult arena. However, we have tons of mainstream contacts and have gotten our clients lots of interviews with Cosmo, Cosmo Latina, Elle, Refinery29, Vice, Playboy, Jezebel, The Daily Beast, GQ, and many more. In 2014, we got our client Kimber James cast on E! Entertainment’s Botched, and I even appeared with her on the show. Besides getting Kimber cast on a major TV show, we’ve also scored toys for Nikki Delano, Domino Presley, Ryan Driller, and Mia Isabella, plus we’re currently working on a deal for Lance Hart. There have been many other highlights, but winning the NightMoves Award for Behind the Scenes in 2018 for all the stellar work that we do was definitely one of the biggest. The Rub PR is known for producing results, going above and beyond, giving personalized attention, and doing whatever it takes to make our clients successful.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I think the fact that I never give up and am willing to take on any challenge. If I don’t know something, I will figure it out or ask for help. I don’t give up easily and will do whatever it takes to get our clients’ names out there and make them successful, even if it’s beyond our job description or scope.

Hello Rub PR and Erica Icon. I just sent you an email about a project proposal (I am the fellow from Oregon). I am anxious to learn if your company can help me or not. I believe that I have “a hidden gem” of a project. Thanks.
