Meet Eric Ramey of 10th Planet Pasadena in Altadena

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eric Ramey.

Eric, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
13 years ago, while I was living in New York, I was looking for an activity in order to get into shape. I discovered Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and started taking classes at Renzo Gracie Academy in Manhattan. I fell in love with it immediately. I found it incredible mentally stimulating, as well as, of course, physically. Roughly a year in, I learned of Eddie Bravo and his unorthodox approach to the sport. Two years later, I moved to LA to study under Eddie and learn the 10th Planet System from the man himself. Ten years later, I’m now a 1st-degree black belt under Eddie and I own a 10th Planet school in Altadena, along with my partner Erik “Compella” Cruz.

Has it been a smooth road?
There were some inherent nagging injuries that can happen to the body along the way. Every Jiu Jitsu practitioner experiences this within their own personal journey. Nothing overly serious from Jiu Jitsu itself.

On a personal note a year ago, I was diagnosed with heart disease and had to undergo Bypass surgery in order to save my life. Purely genetic. As it turns out, if it wasn’t for being in great shape from Jiu Jitsu, I might have never survived. The recovery time for me was cut in half because of my physical condition. Now I’m back to 100% and sparring again. Feeling great.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the 10th Planet Pasadena story. Tell us more about the business.
We are a no-gi Jiu Jitsu system. Different from other Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Judo gyms which train in the Gi (the traditional kimono) Our martial art is focused on submission grappling. Fundamental to mixed martial arts and self-defense. The emphasis on our system is placed on both fundamental and unorthodox techniques that prepare us for the art of fighting.

The practice of Jiu Jitsu helps build confidence, discipline, happiness and excellent physical conditioning.

Compella and myself are uniquely known within our association for the evolution of technique and helping to add to the system. For example, I’ve had a very large influence on the development of our leg locking approach.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
It’s only going to get bigger and bigger. Ever since the UFC became mainstream, interest in Jiu Jitsu has skyrocketed. The trend is going to move towards more. No-Gi Jiu Jitsu due to its practicality towards self-defense and MMA. As well as being a much more spectator-friendly sport than its Gi counterpart.
