Today we’d like to introduce you to Eric Peters and Tyler King.
Eric and Tyler, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
We started off back in 2009 when there was still very little going on in LA coffee scene. Our owner, Tyler King, was looking to venture outside of a boring life in commercial real estate. Outside of a few new, mostly from outside of LA, roaster cafes there was a desert when it came to local specialty coffee. We naively thought that coffee would be super easy and we could simply make the best coffee taste great everyday– so much more work and thought followed!
Right off the bat, we realized that there was so much more going on in the specialty coffee world that we weren’t even aware existed and it got us very stoked. The process of exploration and discovery continues each day at Coffee Commissary, from our never-ending pursuit of the most awesome coffees from the finest roasters to trying new brewing ideas or equipment. We hope to share our excitement with our amazing guests on the other side of the counter.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No major setbacks or struggles aside from the numerous trial and errors that help us progress forward. There’s always obstacles to navigate and as much as we swear and throw things at those obstacles we look back fondly on how they made us stronger and smarter afterwards with a slight pleasure.
Please tell us about Coffee Commissary.
We are a locally owned and operated specialty coffee shop + Cafe born in Los Angeles. We love our industry and the L.A. Coffee Community. We are considered a “multi-roaster,” meaning we offer coffees from several different roasters. There are hundreds of incredibly talented roasters around the country and around the world, so as a multi-roaster, we’re able to choose what roasters we believe work best in our cafe and by honoring the roasters craft, we are able to focus on ours, the cafe experience and brewing.
We are known for hand brewed, pour-over coffee, beautiful latte art and a high energy vibe. Most of our customers know, we aren’t always the go-to spot to study your lines but we’re ok with that. We strive to create a space where people can connect with others and have great conversations. Our guests also know, we love music. If you’re looking to broaden your music library, spend an hour at any of our locations with your Shazam on. I can guarantee you will hear music you have never heard before. I always tell people, “if you don’t like the music today, come back tomorrow and it will be completely different.”
In 7 years, we have expanded to 6 locations from Santa Monica to West Hollywood to Glendale and in between. We are proud to be from Los Angeles. This city means too much to so many people and we are incredibly grateful to serve so many Los Angeles Communities.
