Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Yang.
Emily, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Growing up in a fusion of Burmese and Chinese cultural along with Western education I have always been inspired by a diverse perspective of the different kinds of music in the world. My first instrument was piano and later on, I picked up playing flute, guitar, violin and traditional Burmese instrument Saung. I have truly fell in love making music with people and also capturing every moment I’ve had.
I went to Berklee College of Music in 2014 and graduated as Magna Cum Laude in 2018. During this time I was able to develop my skills to work on audio aspects such as music and sound for different kinds of content such as jingle writing, producing original music and composing orchestral pieces. I have always been fascinated by the sound and music in film and through my studies, at Berklee, I was even more sure of pursuing a career in working for sound and music for visual content.
After Berklee, I moved to Los Angeles to pursue my dream of working in the field of audio post-production. I started out as an intern at the Grammy-winning studio, Igloo Music, that has worked on feature films such as “La La Land” and “And a Star is Born”. After a few months of the internship ended, I started working for the studio as a freelance audio editor for them and I was able to work on projects that the studios has done for Walt Disney Company, Netflix and Square Enix.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I believe there is always some sort of obstacle on any journey. It is important to always learn from the mistakes and make improvements as the journey continues. Working hard doesn’t guarantee the perfect result but without any hard work, there is no chance of success at all.
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I specialize in the field of post-production for audio in TV/film/video games. I’m an audio engineer that work in editing, mastering and mixing for sound. With my background in classical music and composition, I’m fluent in all genres of music and this allows me to be able on multiple kinds of projects ranging dialogue editing to orchestral music mixing.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
It’s been a great year working at Igloo Music! I was able to participate in multiple localization for Disney feature films such as Aladdin 2019 and Ralph Breaks the Internet. Disney has been a great influence for me ever since I was a little kid and been able to work on Disney project now is truly a dream come true!
