Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Katz.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Emily. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I grew up dancing and became a professional dancer after studying at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA. I danced as a Showgirl in Las Vegas and in theaters around the country. I have always been drawn to beauty – I was the friend doing everyone’s makeup for dance recitals, performances, proms, etc. I moved to Las Vegas right after college to perform in “Jubilee!” as a showgirl. I loved the glamour that surrounded that job. Long eyelashes and red lipstick were my uniform.
When I moved to New York City and found myself in day-long auditions waiting around, I passed the time by doing makeup on myself and my friends. Soon these friends were requesting to come to my apartment before a photoshoot, big callback, or performance, so I could do their hair and makeup for them. What started out as a “side-hustle”, quickly become an everyday job, one that I loved. I now am a full-time freelance makeup artist and hairstylist. I am based in New York City but travel all over for clients. I work with actors, models, dancers, brides, businesswomen, and everyone in between. I get to hear incredible stories and be a part of people’s most special moments.
Has it been a smooth road?
My transition from dancer and performer to makeup artist was a pretty seamless path. It was something I was already doing, and I was lucky that I had a whole network of people who needed makeup and hair often. I quickly teamed up with photographers, some that I had worked with and some that I just knew of from the Broadway Community. Once I created a name for myself, I was booking Opening Nights, Weddings, Red Carpets, and Photoshoots pretty regularly. Deciding to shift my focus away from something I had worked so hard at my entire life (dancing) was the hardest part. I had to give up dance jobs and miss out on opportunities because I was already booked doing makeup. I still dance for fun (and exercise!), but the love I have for makeup fills the creative void I may have feared.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am a freelance Makeup Artist and Hair Stylist.
I am hired by individuals or companies for all different jobs including Photoshoots, Red Carpets, Opening Nights, Press Appearances, Weddings, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, and other events. I also work on Film & Video sets.
I would say I am known for my natural approach to makeup. Most people just want to look like the best version of themselves, not turn into someone completely different. My attention to detail allows for the highest quality of natural beauty.
I am proud of the impact I make on people’s lives. Raising their confidence of how they look truly transfers into how they feel about and carry themselves.
