Meet Elizabeth Parr of Guv’nors Boxing Club

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Parr.

Hi Elizabeth, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Started boxing at 14, won 5 national championships, was on the Womens USA Team, was ranked #1 on the country for 4yrs straight, fought 1 pro fight and decided women’s boxing was gonna pay me what needed/deserved, started training people in 2007, ended up in Long Beach 2012, decided this was the place I would open a gym, worked my butt off and saved every single penny, opened Guv’nors Boxing Club 5 de Mayo 2018.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Is anything a smooth road? Like, ever? LOL. Definitely not smooth when you’re building something from scratch. Money is a struggle, knowing what to do opening up a brick and mortar. Figuring out licenses and permits when you’ve known zero about how to do that. Never mind a male-dominated sport/business. Going from nothing to something means NO loans, NO mami y papi dinero, NO savings acct, NO employees. NO nothing. I had grit, determination, and big ovaries (should I say balls? Ovaries sound funny, haha)

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Guv’nors Boxing Club?
I own and operate a boxing club. I’m a Mexican American female and I take no shit from anyone. I think that what sets my gym apart from others is that I can teach you to fight, just workout, and I’m personable. Boxing Clubs are intimidating. That’s a fact. But if you can muster up the courage to just step foot in this place, you’ll soon find out this is or can be your new home. A place to learn, punch and be punched (that’s optional), and make friends outside of work. Check website for pricing.

What makes you happy?
The kids that I teach. When I take them to competitions, it makes me feel whole. Spending time teaching someone an art and watching them execute it is a fulfillment like no other. Teaching an art that includes mind, body, discipline, strategy, rhythm,…well that’s something that stays for the rest of their life. I love that.
