Meet Elizabeth Messina

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Messina.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
At the tender age of twelve, my mother gave me my first camera. I fell in love. I have always been a bit of an introvert, and photography gave me a voice, a way to connect with the world around me.

I specialize in natural light intimate portraits of women, couples and children. I do commercial and editorial work as well, often in my newly redesigned studio (https://www.domino.com/content/elizabeth-messina-photography-studio-home-tour/) I also capture a small number of weddings every year.

I adore making images now as much as I did when I first discovered photography. For me, photography is the language of memories. I love capturing the nuances of life and sharing these moments and memories with others.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, not at all. The life of an artist is full of struggles both internal and external. I am hard on myself and always strive to be a better photographer, a better person. When I am overwhelmed, I try to focus on all the blessings in my life. I love to cook, spend time with my husband and children, and take my dogs to the park.

Simple things are often the cure for my creative obstacles. The outside stress that comes with being a creative self-employed entrepreneur is inevitable. They are also often out of our control. I try not to focus on the disappointments but rather put my all into the jobs I have. The most important thing is not to give up.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I am known for luminous natural light photographs. Many of my clients are women. I am proud to still be in business for almost 20 years. I am very proud to be named by Vogue & Harper’s Bazaar as one of the best photographers in the world. I am also very honored to have captured the lives of many celebrities.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
That’s hard to say. Good luck I think is often our hands, when preparation meets opportunity. It can feel like bad luck when you don’t book a job you really wanted.

Sometimes that’s is simply the universe pointing you in another direction, I try to cherish the good things that happen and not let the bad things get me too down.
