Eliseo, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
It all started in middle school at age 12. It grew out of a need to look better and have a fresh haircut. Being 3 out of 7 boys in a first-generation Mexican-American Family, I didn’t exactly get barbershop haircuts as this was a costly expense. My parents saved money by having my mom cut our hair with her orange sewing scissors, this did the trick up until ”middle school” a pre-teens potential nightmare where kids could be cruel and tease you for having an in-home haircut by your mom.
One of many fueling factors my fascination to pursue cutting my own hair was a visit to my ”cool“ cousin‘s house. I caught him cutting one of his friend’s hair looking fresh mind you they were high school teenagers aka “cool kids” they had girls’ attention and kept themselves fresh. They were able to look cool because they cut their own hair. So I spent more time observing him picking up tips that would improve my own haircuts in the bathroom mirror. After cutting countless neighborhood kids, friends and my own hair.
I grew tired and bored and when I was out of high school. It stopped being a passion and temporarily deviated to becoming an electrician a short-lived electrical career due to the 2004 economy downturn. Which left me jobless and moneyless. I had a career redirection that came out of necessity which led to finding my calling and passion in life as a Barber. My first professional opportunity came when I was given an apprenticeship opportunity by a Barbershop owner in the East Valley. Which came because my younger brother Moi mentioned me being skilled at cutting hair to the owner and bought me my first professional clippers after several interviews she gave me the apprenticeship.
Soon after outgrowing what I could learn here, I knew this was just the beginning. So, I was quick to absorb all the knowledge and build my skills like a sponge I took it all in and through painstaking trial and error and persevering through setbacks and learning curves. I knew I had to branch out and expose myself to more talented barbers. My first Barbershop owner really taught me the foundation and basics. But I had reached a plateau after 12 years of perfecting my craft and a handful of barbershops later. I would take a leap of faith and launch my first barbershop. Winter of 2017 Timeless Barber Co opened its doors for business thousands of haircuts later Timeless has branched out to merchandising and creating its own line of hair products currently in the works 2021.
Helping others has always brought me immense personal satisfaction. Which is why I believe Barbering drew me in for life. And I believe Fresh Haircuts by a Trained Barber makes the difference in a person’s life. People can tell your current mood with your haircut, it’s an important factor in any gentleman’s life if not all men to have there owned Barber in my opinion. Because it’s an important life bond built on trust. I’ve had my hand in many first impressions making a good first impression and living one’s life with pride in one’s appearance is essential for all people. Which is why I do what I do. It’s my responsibility to care when someone decides to trust me with their haircut. Which is why we have been so successful we care and we’re are committed to that fact when customers sit on any of our chairs. Every haircut matters.
Has it been a smooth road?
Winter of 2017 Timeless Barber Co. opened its doors for business. Armed and full of naive optimism, I was the only Barber when we launched as a business owner on the hunt to search and find five additional talented & passionate Barbers. Launching a business and finding appropriate financing was daunting in itself proved a tough feat to overcome. The next obstacle would also prove a worthy adversary creating strategies and sales & operations plans to run a business daily while not sacrificing customer service was a David and Goliath story which caused me to draw on my experience and educating myself and close business advisers uncovering a new appreciation for genuine help as a business owner creating and executing daily operations submerging myself into the business to the point where my family life suffered a lot.
When you’re building the legacy I have in my heart and mind I know sacrifices have to be made but knowing and living them no-one can ever prepare you for the reality of it all the strain on my family life has been huge not being able to spend time with my kids and fiancé has been hard. Growing the business became my priority a colossal animal that needs to be tamed. Planning and committing to consistency would be tested in my first year. I had been on the other side as a barber. But now as an owner, you are confronted with new fronts where you will feel alone, especially when it’s only your dream the mind games and challenges you run across to constantly motivate yourself.
