Meet Eiko Watanabe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eiko Watanabe.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Eiko. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
It started as a hobby, I was always into makeup and was constantly into going with the trends and following the new style. Based on what was on the trend, I’ve changed my styles. One day, I was offered to teach a class for makeups, at the time, I did not have any experience for professional makeup or teaching and everything was based on my hobby. Out of curiosity, I’ve decided to take the offer and teach. Majority of my students were insecure about their make-up skills or a crowd that was not able to follow the trends. They’ve all looked up to me and asked for my advice and help. I was being moved to see my students improved as they’ve started learning, they were becoming beautiful and confident every time they’ve started applying their make up based on what they’ve learned. On my last lesson with them, we’ve shared tears and they’ve thanked me for the teaching I’ve done. From that moment, I’ve decided to become professional makeup artist and wanted to make people happy by proceeding and improving my skills.

Has it been a smooth road?
To be honest, I’ve never felt as anything I’ve gone through as grievance or difficulty. I’m not sure why but since my profession started as hobby so I am just happy and having so much fun that I am able to proceed with my career. However, I am never completely satisfied with my work. I’ve always set my expectations high and tell myself, “I can do better”, “I can make them more beautiful,” even though my clients are happy for my service. Everyday is learning and experience process for me.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
In Japan, my title was “Beauty Make-Up Artist,” which is providing a guidance for the new make-up artists. However, like I’ve mentioned, I never settle. Setting my expectations to always achieve higher and keep going is what my motto is. My goal is to become Hollywood make-up artist where everyone in the world will recognize me creations. I’ve left my career, fame, and reputations I’ve built in Japan and decided to have fresh new start in Los Angeles and will still be going for my dream.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I see this industry continuing to grow and its growth is going to be on a global scale. In terms of shifts along with changes, and trends, Asia is at the forefront, and in order to sustain this vast amount of growth in film, art, and entertainment industry, our industry itself will evolve and meet the necessary demands.
