Today we’d like to introduce you to Shiloh Baylon.
Hi Shiloh, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Hello, I’m Shiloh Baylon, 11 years old multi-talented and awarded singer-songwriter from Orange County, California. My parents were born and raised in the Philippines, so that makes me Filipino, but I was born and raised here in America. I firmly believe music is in my soul, it is my passion.
My mom said that ever since I was little, I respond to music and sounds instantly. I would smile, and my face would light up… later, I would hum and dance along to the beat. At the early age of 2, I would sing along with my dad who would sing and play his guitar for me. It did not take long for me to take center stage, grab the mic, and perform during jam nights with my musical family.
Since then, I embraced being a performer and took all classes and joined all clubs that I could in order to improve my craft: piano, singing, ballet, dancing, songwriting, musical theater, etc. I love expressing myself through performing, I get to share what I love doing and get better at it.
Last year, when most of us were stuck in our homes during the pandemic, I found out about this online singing contest; I really wanted to try it, so I practiced and practiced and sent in my entry. Thankfully, I won as a finalist! After that, I have been invited to perform as front act for shows and special numbers for events and was a regular busker at our local mall. I was so grateful for all the opportunities that came my way to be able to perform in front of an audience. I wanted to express myself and share my talent with those around me, being part of the community and bringing people in the community together.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There are so many great artists out there, that it’s hard to be recognized especially when you’re starting out. But this does not discourage me. It actually makes me want to try harder. To be better at what I do. To make a name for myself.
I actually started writing my own songs after a negative experience. In elementary school, I was made fun of and picked on because I had a skin condition. This made me insecure for a time. And I took that experience and turned that into one of my songs, “Freak.” Writing helped me figure out that being different is okay. It makes you a unique, one-of-a-kind, you. I’m so grateful I had good mentors and the support from my family that helped me develop my self-confidence. I get inspiration from them to keep going. I am so thankful to have a strong support system from my family and my community.
I also have to balance being an up-and-coming singer-songwriter to being a student, and a pre-teen. I still want to experience being in school at my age. I participate in all school activities and make sure I do my best in my classes. I am currently the president of the Student Council of my school; hence I can say I really have a busy life in and out of school at this early age.
And then after school, I come home to study and practice for my next performance. I make sure I put the time and effort to learn the song and own it. Sometimes I still have doubts about myself and sometimes, I overthink. I’m still trying to figure out my way. But I know that with discipline and dedication, I can make it.
The other single, that I released last year is “My Life” and this song is about my journey through music and how it all started.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a singer-songwriter, actress, model, performer, musical artist and love the theater. I sang the National Anthem for the Angel City FC game at Banc of California Stadium. My inspirations are Olivia Rodrigo, Whitney Houston and Bruno Mars. My recent projects include being the first Filam model for Athleta and worked for a commercial with Logan Paul for his new flavor PRIME DRINK campaign.
I was awarded Best Child Performer by Gawad Amerika Awards 2022; Supermodel Fashion New Star Finalist by International Fashion Show Model in Hollywood; Finalist by SoCal Pinoy Idol; and Best Vocalist by Legacy Studio Open Mic, to name a few.
I’m proud to be part of community events and even those that help fundraise for a cause. I like to do things for a purpose. One time we helped raise funds for a scholarship, another time I sang for an event that helps build leaders. I like being part of the community and sharing my talents with them.
Currently, I am writing more songs and hoping I could finish a whole album soon. I’ve also been booked for a short film, some commercials, and some live events. I’m so excited to get back out there and perform for everyone. I also really enjoy meeting new people and friends.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
For those who are just starting out, I’d like to share the importance of practice and putting your time into the things we do. We should be dedicated to improving and being better. In hard times, let’s have resiliency and never give up in the pursuit of our dreams. Let’s also encourage one another and offer support.
