Meet Eerren Tsaturyan of Modest Fly Art Studio Gallery in Tujunga

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eerren Tsaturyan.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Eerren. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Having graduated from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena in 2008, my first instinct was to have space to work. With the opening of Modest Fly Art in 2009, I had decided to use my space as a small gallery, showcasing other artists, and using the space as a studio. It was exciting meeting new artists in the community and giving newly graduated art students a chance to show their work. After a few years of running the gallery, we expanded the space and decided to start teaching art to all ages. As we began teaching, while still keeping the gallery going, we increased our student list and grew at a normal pace. The studio has been a little haven of mine as I’ve used it for personal space, events, workshops, and classes. It has grown with me as I’ve grown from a young lady into a young woman and mother. We have recently moved into an even bigger space and, now, teach about 100 students of our own, of all ages. We continue to keep the momentum going and are so grateful to do what we love.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
A smooth road… I would not call it smooth, necessarily. Each day, month, and year had its struggles. Whether it was financial, business related, or personal artistic struggles… there were struggles. I believe that everything I’ve gone through has made me stronger, smarter, and more confident in what I’m doing. The struggles have made me better at it and, I believe, there will be struggles now and forever. Nothing comes easy and, though, I have a lot of support, it has definitely been a learning and growing experience.

So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Modest Fly Art Studio Gallery story. Tell us more about the business.
Modest Fly Art is a studio space that offers people of all ages to learn the technicalities of art, including drawing, painting, mixed media, collage, and some sculpture. We use our wall space to showcase our teachings and, at times, other people’s artwork. At the same time, we encourage creativity to anyone who walks in our doors. It is a place of unique, creative thinking and doing. I feel that I am most proud of the curriculum that I have set for my students. Each student goes through a set curriculum of projects to learn their basics and fundamentals with a Modest Fly Art instructor. We begin with colors and mixing as we move onto shapes and forms. It is a good base to start with anyone, experienced or not. Experienced artists who come to us just move through the curriculum quicker and move towards their personal projects at a faster pace. We work individually with each beginner student to make sure they are ready to take on all other projects.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck has brought me my husband and family. I am lucky to have such love and support from them when it comes to helping me do what I love. They have supported me financially, physically, and mentally through my ventures and still do today.
