Today we’d like to introduce you to Edward Ackah-Miezah.
Hi Edward, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I got started working in coffee when I was just a young lad in High School. I was living in Seattle and worked at a coffee cart there. It was pretty eye opening to me how much more to coffee there was than I had originally thought. I fell in love with the art of it and also the way it had the ability to connect people, coffee really is beautiful like that.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No road worth traveling is completely smooth. I started my company in 2005 doing a version of what im doing now. It was basically a mobile catering coffee cart, I would get hired for movie and tv set as well as a lot of different private parties and real estate open houses. It was fun but definitely a grind! The fact that it was event-based meant that sometimes there was a ton of work and sometimes there wasn’t s much. Navigating whether to keep going or pack it in and try and do something else was a constant. Growing the company was also challenging as finding the right staff hasn’t always been easy. We’ve been super fortunate though in that we’ve found some really amazing people and have been able to build a great family of baristas that are really committed to what we’re building together.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We’re a specialty coffee shop and clearly our product is coffee and tea-based beverages. That said, we aim to be much more than just a place to get coffee at. We really aim to be a place where folks can come and feel seen and valued. With a year and a half of distancing and isolation, we feel like folks are yearning for connection. It’s a basic human need to feel connected and if we can be a part of that, then we’re doing something we all can be really proud of.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
I grew up with three brothers, most of my fond childhood memories surround playing and fighting and just being wild with them.
