Meet Eddie Lee of Funktronic Labs in Pasadena

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eddie Lee.

Eddie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Funktronic Labs was founded by Eddie Lee and Kalin Houston, the core developers of the famous PixelJunk series (Q-Games). The studio has been in existence since 2013, where they originally formed in Kyoto, Japan and eventually relocated to sunny Pasadena, California. The studio focuses on delivering high-quality and creative interactive experiences and has shipped several critically acclaimed titles such as Cosmic Trip (VR), Fujii (VR) and Nova-111 (PC/Consoles).

Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road! Statistically, 90% of start-ups fail so our odds are already not stacked in our favor. Being in games and VR comes with its own challenges. More specifically, making games is a financially expensive and emotional arduous activity that requires a certain amount of grit to endure. Our studio has been very fortuitous to not only have survived for over six years but also to have been given the ability to create our own original IP and experiences.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Our studio has been fortunate to have delivered high-quality content in console, PC, virtual reality, and augmented reality. We are most proud of our ability to adapt our unique creative process into any interactive technology. We can take a new technology (i.e., virtual reality) and figure out what makes a “juicy” experience that feels completely native and natural to that platform. I believe our ability to manifest our creativity in any technological medium is our studio’s true strength.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Los Angeles is definitely a great place to be if you are interested in getting into games. LA has a fantastic intersection of art and technology – stemming from its film industry roots. On the education side, you have fantastic schools like Pasadena Art Center, Cal Tech, UCLA, etc. that breathes new life into the industry. From the food to the vibrant, diverse cultures within the city, LA is truly remarkable. Only thing that would make LA perfect is if had no traffic.
