Today we’d like to introduce you to Ebonique.
Ebonique, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’m from Evanston, IL- a suburb just north of Chicago. I came to LA about 5 years ago to pursue a career in music as a solo singer. I started with acting and modeling as ways to make money bc the music business is definitely a time and money investment. I released my first EP in 2014, and toured musically in China for 4 months in 2015, performing at several clubs in the mainland. Upon returning to the US, I also performed at many local LA venues including Hotel Cafe and The House of Blues Voodoo Lounge. I recently started DJing in 2017 and have been hired for private events, comedy shows and house parties.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have definitely been some ups and downs, as life journeys are not all clear-cut paths. I made my first EP pretty quickly after getting to LA but ran into issues when trying to craft a unique sound that fit my musical personality.
Not having a lot of money to pay producers, I had to work with people willing to put in the time for little money and this usually leads to projects taking longer and lots of creative differences. I’ve gotten closer with my latest singles Miss Communication and my next single, Lipstick, but I’m still developing and getting closer to where I’d like to be.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Ebonique – what should we know?
I’m a singer, actress and developing DJ. In a city full of people pursuing the same jobs, the differences lie in the way we communicate our art. I’m most proud of my courage and drive to do my best, against all odds. I’m unique in my perspective, fueled by my upbringing and my purple pandacorn way of looking at life.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Staying true to my own self in the art I’m creating is most important to me. I’ve tried working in teams where I created art that was not true to me, and it leads to unhappiness. I’ve realized that getting there slowly but intact is far better than getting there fast missing pieces and doing something I don’t want to be doing.
