Meet Elizabeth Kitchen of E. F. Kitchen Studio in Venice

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Kitchen.

Elizabeth, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
In Paris, France in the 1970’s I began my own film production company, Luc & Lisa, Inc., and produced a feature-length film called “Dream Center.” I then moved to Los Angeles and worked as an associate producer for Ed Pressman Productions on the film “Teen Angel.”

During the early eighties, I refocused my career on fine art photography, specializing in the art of platinum/palladium printing. My first group exhibition was in Paris in 1984, and my first solo exhibition was in 1985 at the Los Angeles Center for Photographic Studies. Over the years I have had twelve more solo exhibitions at sites around the United States. My work has been included in forty-nine group exhibitions internationally, including at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas; the Meadows Museum of Art, Shreveport, Louisiana; the Museum of the Southwest, Midland, Texas; the Accademia di Belle Art, Genoa, Italy; and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

My work is in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, the Biblioteque Nationale in Paris, the George Eastman House in Rochester, and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, among others.

Has it been a smooth road?
My work is not commercial and I am not a fabricator, so it has never been a smooth road. The struggles are always there. I tend to focus on the quality of the work and on moving forward.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am a fine art photographer, specializing in the art of platinum/palladium printing. The platinum process is an antiquated printing method developed in the late nineteenth century. The most archival of all photographic works on paper, platinum prints are contact-printed to create a luminous, highly detailed, and delicate result.

Given the intensive labor and expensive cost of making platinum prints, they are exceedingly rare and sought out by serious collectors.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Los Angeles is a great city for art and businesses. Anybody can start a business here with hard work, good organization skills and proper publicity. There is always room for improvement, though I am not a specialist in this department. I find the traffic is usually a BIG deterrent to my activities.
