Today we’d like to introduce you to Dylan Schenk.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
We created LIFT Society in 2016 because we wanted to see something different in the fitness industry. As we figured out what LIFT Society was, we (and our members) went through many trials and errors in the form of Olympic lifting, kettlebell training, and CrossFit-style workouts until we eventually created the LIFT Society model and programming that it is today.
LIFT Society is a semi-private training gym focused on strength, hypertrophy, and aesthetics. People come to LIFT Society to get stronger, have more muscle definition and to lower their body fat percentage. We are the only group fitness program that can replace your personal trainer; every member has their own squat rack, barbell, bench and weights and is meticulously coached for the entire session.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
As small business owners, running LIFT Society has never been easy. It’s been a constant battle of trial and error and adjusting to the constant changes in the culture around us. At times we have had to take separate jobs to pay the bills and have absorbed a ton of stress and sleepless nights. As gym owners, Covid 19 hit us especially hard for almost two years. However, every struggle and obstacle we overcame made us stronger and we have never looked back.
We’ve been impressed with LIFT Society, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At LIFT Society we prioritize education and accountability. Most people don’t know how to lift weights and those who do often lack the appropriate structure in order to do it on a consistent basis. This is where we come in. We keep our classes small in order to educate our members on proper form and hold them accountable to showing up and getting results on a weekly basis.
We are also a members only gym. We don’t focus on drop-ins or class packages like most fitness studios do. This means that everyone who participates in our classes is invested in our program and is a part of our community. This has helped us to create a society filled with people who love to lift weights and are humble, coachable and inspiring to be around.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
If you want to be a business owner, you have to take risks. We opened up our first fitness business called, CrossTrainLA in 2012 with only enough cash to pay for our first two months rent and the deposit. We focused on high-intensity interval training (HIIT), Pilates and Yoga. By 2016 we had built CrossTrainLA into a successful business but decided that we really wanted to focus on strength training. So we changed our whole model and created LIFT Society. This was a challenging time for us and we lost most of our clients when we changed our business. Nevertheless, we wouldn’t be where we are at today if we didn’t embrace risk as an important part of entrepreneurship and an important part of our story.
