Today we’d like to introduce you to Duncan Tooley.
Duncan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started my career as a Catholic religious teaching bother, teaching science in a New Orleans high school for 7 years before beginning my 35-year secular career in corporate information technology that was interrupted by disabling neuropathy. After three years of ineffective medical treatment, including bi-weekly hospital infusions of immune-boosting gamma globulin, I discovered hypnosis and used it to clear his illness. This transformation and its accompanying spiritual awakening inspired my career change in 2006 to become a mind trainer, medical hypnotist, and coach specializing in hypnosis for medical issues, weight reduction, and pain relief. I teach others to change their thinking, beliefs, and habits. The resultant change yields pain-free, lower-weight, less-stressed clients feeling themselves more in control of their health and emotions. I recently published 2 books on pain relief using natural methods. I am also a lifelong artist, having fabricated many stained glass creations for churches, residences, and two NYC train stations. I now create fractal paintings using watercolors and modified photographs.
Has it been a smooth road?
I joined the order of religious Brothers that taught me at Catholic High School in Baton Rouge because the love I felt from them was greater than what I had experienced in my family. The religious brotherhood was rewarding and I enjoyed teaching, but I came to realize that I wanted to be married and have a family. I left religious life at age 28, married an ex-nun, and started a career in Information Technology (called “data processing” back then). The computer journey from punched cards to big mainframes spanned several companies and more than three decades of many positions with ups and downs, but the real downer came when I started falling at client sites while working for Computer Science Corporation. It was neuropathy in my legs, feet, and hands of unknown cause. While neuropathy is normally either nerve cell death or autoimmune system attack of the nerve sheath (myelin), I had both. Nothing helped. The biweekly $10,000 IVIg hospital infusions seemed to provide some energy, but the neuropathy continued until I discovered hypnosis is a method to communicate with your body cells. I used daily self-hypnosis to instruct them: “Nerve cells grow back! Don’t worry that the doctors say you cannot! Immune System, leave the nerve cells alone!” After 5 weeks, I felt somewhat better. I stopped the infusions and other medications and yet continued to feel good. That’s when I realized that I had cured my neuropathy with my mind, something I had never heard of. Being of a scientific bent, I needed research to prove that this wasn’t a fluke. What I found was hundreds of medical studies documenting the benefits of using hypnosis for getting people well quicker. That’s when I changed careers to become a medical hypnotist.
As I was completing my hypnosis certification studies, including hypnosis for anesthesia, I needed surgery for an umbilical hernia repair. I convinced the surgeon to let me use self-hypnosis as my general anesthesia. The surgery went fine and was pain-free. I even spoke to the surgeons during surgery. Afterwards, my surgeon admitted that he could not tell the difference between my surgery and those with gaseous general anesthesia, (His testimonial is on my website: http://www.duncantooleyhypnosis.com/hypnosis-effectiveness-reviews/), but the anesthesiologist was hopping mad because she didn’t get paid that day. Although hypnosis is widely used in sports and medicine, it is called by other names to avoid the general prejudice against hypnosis because of its image from movies and entertaining stage shows. One of my challenges has been dispelling that image of hypnosis for my potential clients. I developed a myth-busting examination of the half-truths and full-truths behind the most common myths about hypnosis. (Cf. http://www.duncantooleyhypnosis.com/12-worst-hypnosis-myths-busted/)
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Duncan Tooley Hypnosis – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My official company name is Tooley Transformation Training, but the popular name is Duncan Tooley Hypnosis. What I do is teach others to change their thinking, beliefs, and habits. This results in pain-free, lower-weight, less-stressed clients feeling themselves more in control of their health and emotions. I specialized in weight loss and developed the “Mental Gastric Band” that achieves the effects of the physical “lap band.” I ceased doing the 13-week program individually and now have the modules available on my digital store for use at home. I specialize in helping clients turn off nuisance pain, and published two books on how to do that yourself.
I periodically teach self-hypnosis classes at several venues and give talks on healing oneself. (I am a member of Toastmasters International, Torrance “Health & Wellness Chapter”). What I am most proud about is that many clients tell me how much hypnosis has helped them and they refer others. A former client recently came to a self-hypnosis class for a refresher and said that she has been using what I taught her daily for the last ten years. What sets me apart from other therapists is that hypnosis is more effective and much quicker with fewer sessions.
What sets me apart from other hypnotists is:
1. I construct each session from the client interview instead of using “canned” scripts.
2. I have my client interview, while hypnotized, their All-Wise Higher-Self about what is the best solution for what they want.
3. I offer no advice, using only what my client has discovered during hypnosis.
4. I give homework: Repeat several affirmations, instructions to your subconscious, as you fall asleep and upon first awakening.
5. This results in great client satisfaction with very few sessions.
What are your plans for the future? What are you looking forward to or planning for – any big changes?
My plans are:
1. Promote my recently opened office in San Marino (Mondays only) near Pasadena.
2. Get the awareness of the power of mind over our body more publicized.
3. Give free talks on this subject to audiences in the South Bay and Pasadena areas.
4. Give away 100,000 copies of my pain books & sell 100,000 copies.
