Meet Duangjai Seedakun of Devi Wax in Santa Monica

Today we’d like to introduce you to Duangjai Seedakun.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grow up in a small village in Northeast Thailand with my parents and two sisters. We were traditional Thai. We would bring gifts or food, fruits to the monks in our village almost everyday. We celebrated all the Thai festivals. I never imagine that I would leave my village and family.

But one day, when I was in my early twenties my mother asked me if I wanted to go to the U.S. I thought she was joking. But later, she asked me to apply for a Visa, which went smoothly in those pre-911 day. I arrived in Los Angeles not speaking any English or knowing hardly anybody here. A former neighbor from my village was supposed to meet me at LAX but didn’t show up. Fortunately, a student on my inbound flight had befriended me so I stayed with them. In 2007 I opened my first business doing therapeutic massage. Little did I know what that first business would become

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My road was not smooth at first. I came here with little money or knowledge of English. I went to school to learn English as a second language and practiced with customers and friends. I went to massage school and worked as a massage therapist. But I was not satisfied with this career so I returned to esthetician school and applied for a license. Working as a waxing technician, I saw the market demand for waxing with a gentle technique. This gave me confidence that I could operate a waxing salon.

A business partner helped with financial support. My biggest challenge was when due to events beyond my control, my partner was unable to continue. That was right when we opened so I was worried would run out of money before the business would pick up. Fortunately it tool only six months for the business to break even.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Devi Wax – what should we know?
I have a waxing salon on Lincoln Blvd. We remove unwanted hair from any part of the body. When I first got into the business, I almost gave up because removing hair was so painful! Instead I tried to find a way to make removal less painful for my clients. After trying different methods, I developed a method using soft wax and coconut oil. My clients report that my soft wax technique is painless or at least, much more comfortable than other methods. Hopefully, my clients spread the word so my business is known for comfortable, respectful and caring service. We do remove hair but I want my business to be known for caring for my clients and making them feel comfortable.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
