Meet DTLA Makeup Artist: Bethany Garita

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bethany Garita.

Bethany, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am originally from Shreveport Louisiana, at 19 I moved to Florida, I started out as a body piercer in a tattoo shop in Florida. I painted oil and acrylic painting as a hobby. These paintings were mostly of fictional female characters from the shoulders up. So, of course, women in the real world wear makeup so when I painted my women, I would paint makeup on them. Funny enough my friends would like the makeup in the paintings and bug me to do those same styles on them, but I had never done anyone’s makeup before, but after many guilt trips they talked me into it. It became a ritual that when we went out I had to do everyone’s makeup. One day a model approached me at a club and asked me if I would do a paid test with her based on the makeup she saw on my friends, from there on I started doing test shoots for extra money, until I had my son, having my son gave me a whole new look on life. I came to the conclusion that I loved do makeup more than body piercing, I loved the flexibility and the fact that I could make my own schedule and make a living, but I hit some bumps in the road along the way and found myself moving back to Shreveport after 6 years of living in Florida. While back in Louisiana I got Married to my current husband, decided to become a licensed Esthetician, after that I went into trying my hand at film. I worked on the first season of the TV show Salmel, bur none of it was as satisfying as doing print work with models. My husband and I started discussing moving for my makeup career and his modeling care. At the end of Season 1 of Salem, we packed up us and our kids and moved to Los Angeles on faith and determination. I have now been in Los Angeles going on 3 years.

Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road at all it had been a very crooked, bumpy and windy road! Work is up and down as I continue to make a name for myself out here. Having young children makes everything much more work, but I manage. There have been slow times where I haven’t booked work for a week or so, but every year I see more people seeing my work and wanting to book me. Nothing is easy but I still believed that ad long ad you work hard and stay focus you will reach the goals you set forward to achieve!

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
As for the future, I plan to get signed by an artist agency, I am currently actively working on that plan. other future plans include working more music videos, red carpet, and getting more celebrity work in my portfolio.

Let’s dig a little deeper into your story. What was the hardest time you’ve had?
The hardest part in my career I would say when I was forced to move back to Louisiana, which for a while it slowed down my progress doing makeup because there is not as much industry work there, but I knew my goal from the time I moved to Louisiana was to move again. So I worked as hard as I could, Networked as much as possible, and once I work on a big enough budget job, used that to fund my family’s move her to California. Once I got to California I just hit the ground running. Persistence is the key!!!

Do you ever feel like “Wow, I’ve arrived” or “I’ve made it” or do you feel like the bulk of the story is still unwritten?
Well, by my high standards, I, by no means have made it, but I am a lot farther than when I started. Though if I had to choose a moment when I realized that I was heading in the right direction it would be when artist agencies started responding back to my emails and adding me to their lists. It meant that my book was getting their attention!
