Today we’d like to introduce you to Tavia Garland.
Tavia, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started in this business 10 years ago working for a Men’s Magazine in Northern California straight out of cosmetology school. At first I was just doing the models hair then eventually started doing the models makeup. I worked for the magazine until it stopped running. After the magazine stopped I started getting contacted by the models that worked with the magazine as well as the photographers. From then on I started working on their shoots doing the makeup, hair styling, wardrobe styling and even the creative direction of the shoots. I began to gain a reputation in The Bay Area as the “Go to Girl for image consulting which landed me jobs with fashion designers, magazines, brands as well as musicians; thus creating my creative Artist Management Company Evolving Images Inc. After working The Bay Area market for so many years I decided to take a leap of faith and move to a bigger market, so I moved to LA.
Has it been a smooth road?
To be honest with you it has not been a smooth road. I have had to go through some trials and tribulations! I have lost money from clients not paying me for services, photographers not giving me back photos from shoots, models showing up unprepared for a shoot, models not showing up to shoots PERIOD, clients cancelling at the very last second of a job…..etc. You name it, it has happened. On top of all of that still trying to maintain a personal life. At the end of the day it has been a learning experience and it’s been all worth it.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and career?
To be honest with you I don’t believe in “Luck”. My faith, believing in myself and hard work is what has gotten me this far in life as well as my career.
Is there a quality or characteristic that has played an outsized role in your success?
Having a vision of what you want to do, determination, drive, integrity, self-motivation, passion, communication, knowledge, wisdom and focus is what I feel contributes to your success in life as well as your career.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What I love best about LA is there is something always to do as well as the transportation system. It is so easy to get around here. What I don’t like about this city is the segregation. I don’t feel like people are unified enough here.
