Today we’d like to introduce you to Drabbit.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew up in Southern California playing in punk bands but I found myself on the central coast walking along Pismo Beach having recently been downsized from my job as an artist, rudderless, and needing to change. I was dissatisfied with my art, and my music, and everything about my creative expression, and in my frustration I created Drabbit: a six-foot-tall rabbit who produces and DJs house music.
I packed up my life on the central coast and relocated to Lincoln Heights with my girlfriend and our hairless dog El Guapo. Being in Los Angeles put me closer to my network of friends who are musicians and producers and helped me to shape my image (literally) and my sound. When Covid-19 caused the state to lockdown, I loaded my girlfriend and my weird dog into the truck and headed for Palm Springs to ride out the pandemic.
Has it been a smooth road?
I think the first challenge I faced was telling my friends and family that I’m just going to be a rabbit now. I expected a lot of varied reactions but I was really more shocked at how many were upset about the house music thing. Mom was mad I wasn’t producing Garage.
It’s difficult to reinvent yourself, both your outward expression and how you work creatively. I threw out everything. I threw out my support system, my workflow, the tools I used to create, and even my identity. It takes a lot longer than I thought to conjure a lagomorph from nothing. I spent a lot of time bouncing music off of people and cutting and gluing foam. The process of refining a man who dresses like a rabbit into the pool party-loving undisputed champion of the dancefloor (rabbit category) taught me a whole new language of tools and mediums to express myself.
Can you give our readers some background on your music?
I make music for afternoons laying by the pool. House music for your Uber rides home. The sound of being too drunk to stay awake yet too drunk to fall asleep.
I have a growing Twitch channel where I write house tracks and talk about lo-fi music production every Monday and Thursday morning. I started it in February and being stuck inside with nothing but time to create in the Spring gave me the space to develop as a streamer. I find that ritual of sitting down and writing a song in two hours each time I stream keeps me focused.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
What’s not to love about the LA music scene? The west coast even has it’s own flavor of house music.
