Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Tammira Lucas.
Dr. Tammira, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Growing up in Baltimore City I watched as people around me lived the status quo. There weren’t many prominent figures that I could look up to and say “if they can make it, I can.” I always knew that working for someone wasn’t ideal for me, but I also didn’t know anything or was introduced to entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurship wasn’t something that was glorified or talked about during my formative years. It wasn’t until my junior year in college that I was introduced to the business industry. Although I was infatuated with business, how it worked, understanding the concepts and being able to implement them, I was still encouraged to find a “good government” job. And that I did. I worked three years for Baltimore City government and hated every moment of it. I literally watched people die at their desk. They stay there every day waiting for retirement day, and I knew that wasn’t the life for me.
While working for the government, I got pregnant with my daughter, and when I birthed her, I also birthed my first business, “Ryann’s Closet.” Ryann’s Closet was a custom children accessory line that was created because my daughter, Ryann, didn’t have any hair when she was born and I wanted to make sure she coordinated every day. While most moms purchased my products, they were more interested in understanding how I started a business. To me starting a business was something that came natural and I didn’t realize until about two years later that it was a gift to be able to understand business in the magnitude I did. For this reason, I launched my now consulting company, The Business Dr. Consulting where we turn business challenges into profitable solutions by unlocking business growth strategies that work!
I started my consulting business for a few reasons:
1. I didn’t want my daughter to see me give up on my dreams and passions. I watched my mother live the status quo and that impacted me growing up because I didn’t understand my worth fully.
2. I wanted to provide opportunity for people. It’s hard not having someone there to guide you and give you the tools you need to be successful. We all need opportunity and mentors to help us.
3. I wanted to change what generational wealth looks like. I wanted people to understand that black wealth can exist and this is how we can do it.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
If ANYONE ever says there weren’t any struggles in their journey they aren’t telling the truth. There has been and still are so many struggles in my journey.
1. Bad partnerships – This has cost me so much money and time.
2. Balance – I am a mom and balancing that is extremely hard. I have found ways to incorporate my daughter in all my businesses but it’s super hard.
3. Being a black women boss and people taking you serious.
4. Not being IG famous.
5. Building a team. It’s hard building a solid team and this has been and still is a huge struggle of mine.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Business Dr. Consulting – what should we know?
The Business Dr. Consulting firm turns business challenges into profitable solutions. We provide one-on-one consulting and a women’s only virtual academy. We specialize in helping entrepreneurs create sustainable business model that will attract investors. We position businesses to be scalable and profitable. We also expose entrepreneurs to funding opportunities for their businesses and teaching them how to get them!
My passion for helping individuals, especially women, succeed in business is strong. I have witnessed so many budding entrepreneurs receive incorrect information or fluff, and they aren’t able to create sustainable or scalable businesses. Since launching my business I have worked with entrepreneurs in three continents, and all over the United States to help them scale. From tech companies to every day mommy businesses my clients have been able to generate millions in revenue through my strategic strategies. But I consider the success that mom who was once struggling finding that she could actually balance being a mom and successful business owners.
More recently my work has helped me travel into a field that I am ultimately excited about, investing. My focus over the next two years is creating an investment fund that is tied to specific programming that will help women succeed in business. My goal is to get several celebrities (Instagram celebrities, athletes, and music artist) who don’t really understand business but need to ensure they are creating wealth to invest in this fund and turn their boom careers into generational wealth.
My entrepreneur career doesn’t stop with my consulting business. I am the owner of Maryland’s first and only coworking space for mothers. We provide babysitting services so that moms can focus on getting work done rather than being distracted. I am the founder of a non-profit called moms as entrepreneurs where we provide entrepreneurship training and resources to moms in underserved communities. We provide two academies that helps mothers go from the mindset of starting a business to actually launching their businesses. We have launched over 100 mom owned businesses in Baltimore and will be heading on tour this summer to launch more.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Perseverance. Business is hard and there will be days where you wake up questioning your whole existence but you have to keep pushing on. I always wake up and say “if you don’t do it then who will.” There may be man people out here that can do what you do but it’s only one you and no one can do you the way you will do it.
