Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Sharon Silva-Celada.
Dr. Sharon, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I immigrated to the United States of America when I was 13 years old with my mother and two sisters from Honduras. In the United States my place of residence was Albuquerque, NM where I attended High School. Then I Completed my undergrad studies at the University of New Mexico (UNM). After graduating from UNM I went to Inter-American University of Puerto Rico (IAUPR) to become an Optometrist. I graduated Valedictorian from my 2008 optometry class and obtained several other awards as well. After graduation, I got married to my boyfriend of four years in September 6, 2008. We now have two beautiful kids ages three and five. After getting married in Albuquerque, NM I moved with my husband to the beautiful state of California, to Los Angeles, CA to be more exact. After working for several other practices, God provided the opportunity to own my own practice which is where the story is been written.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, ever since coming to the U.S. it has been a road of overcoming stereotypes and almost as if running on an obstacle course. First, I had to overcome the language barrier, and because the area I assisted High School the success rate for Hispanics going to college or just graduating high school was low, the questioning and belittling even from teachers and counselors was constant. Regardless of the negative expectations I successfully graduated High School with honors.
Thanks to my academic excellence, I was able to attend a four year university, the University of New Mexico, for my undergrad studies. I didn’t have money to pay for such education, yet, through the various scholarships earned I was able to obtain my degree with zero debt. I graduated Cum Laude with a degree on Biology. After graduating from UNM I still wanted to pursue my doctorate degree. I applied to different schools and to secure a spot in the next entering class I had to pay about two thousand dollars. With no job, there was no way I could pay that money upfront. I told the interviewer that if I was given the chance I could collect only a quarter of what it was asked, and asked him if they could get the rest when the student loan was approved. I guarantee him that the school was not going to regret giving me the opportunity. He told me he would get back to me on that. By divine intervention, or so I like to think, the interviewing committee accepted my offer, and allowed me to secure that spot with only $500. With that, I ventured myself to Puerto Rico, separating myself from family and loved ones.
The life in Puerto Rico was not all sun and beaches. The way things are handled there is totally different than the states. When I arrived, towards the end of July 2004, I signed a lease to rent an apartment, not knowing that the student loans would be funded until October. Those two and a half months were a struggle since there was no money for anything. It was, however, the need for success and achievement, my main driving force and it gave me the strength to continue in Puerto Rico to complete my studies there.
