Meet Sujata Shah of The Healing Gardens of Ayurveda in Tustin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sujata Shah.

In 2002, following a brief illness and a stressful personal time, Sujata experienced firsthand the many benefits of Ayurveda. Following many tests and side effects of allergy medicines and anti-biotics, her primary care Doctor and ENT specialist, concluded that she would need to be on allergy medicine for the rest of her life. She had developed severe sinusitis, acid reflux, weight loss and anxiety, however she was not happy to accept her Doctor’s suggestion to spend the rest of her life on medication. It was then, that she decided to go “back to her roots” and revisit Ayurvedic medicine. Sujata started her research in Eastern medicine and Ayurveda and concluded that she needed to detoxify her body and a traditional Ayurvedic Panchakarma resonated like the correct next step. At that time, there were not many options to experience Panchakarma in the United States, so Sujata traveled to south India for an amazing 21-day Panchakarma in a beautiful mountain resort surrounded by tea plantations. Upon arrival, she immediately knew she was going to be just fine. Within days, her symptoms started to ease and she felt relaxed. She met Dr. Ram, who was heading the Panchakarma Center at this Resort, and immediately felt connected with his gentle nature and his simple ways to help her understand her imbalances and realize that the mind and body are connected. She healed within a month and all her symptoms went away and never came back. It was in India that she decided to bring authentic Ayurveda and Panchakarma to United States and invited Dr. Ram to come and join her.

A natural healing system from India and a sister science to Yoga, Ayurveda brings balance to the mind and body. Ayurveda incorporates a thorough understand of each individual’s unique body-mind type, to offer guidelines and treatments when needed.

Ayurveda is a powerful preventative and rejuvenative system for health and healing. These are offered as customized massages and body therapies, gentle detoxification, diet and nutrition, personalized yoga and herbal treatment.

In 2005, and with this business model in mind, Sujata and her father founded the Healing Gardens of Ayurveda in Southern California and Dr. Ram. With an East meets West concept, their vision of a full service comprehensive wellness center and clinic came to fruition. They successfully planned, coordinated and managed 3-5 day group retreats to various resort spas in numerous locations. These comprehensive wellness retreats included massage, yoga, meditation, dietary counseling, educational workshops and plant-based/ vegetarian cooking classes.

Their intention is to continue to grow and heal their clients from inside out.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When we opened The Healing Gardens wellness clinic & center in 2005, not a lot of people in our community had heard about Ayurveda. At the beginning, we were really educators in a sense — talking to our community and clients about Ayurveda, a powerful system of healing that goes back in time thousands of years. We hosted workshops at community centers, bookstores and yoga studios and presented case studies at conferences & events. Yoga is considered the sister science of Ayurveda; therefore, yoga enthusiasts were the ideal audience for us at first. In addition, Dr. Ram Tamang is on the faculty at various schools and community colleges, where he teaches a range of Ayurvedic courses. Many of our regular clients are people who have attended our talks or classes with Dr. Ram.

As the word spread about us, and in general about Ayurveda, we have been happy to have a constant flow of people who entrust us with their healing journey and care.

Our business has grown through word of mouth and referrals. We have not invested heavily in marketing campaigns or advertising. The effectiveness of our skilled and caring team ensures that our clients share glowing reviews with their friends and family.

We have numerous people whose whole families are members, and visit us regularly for consultations, counseling, herbs and body therapies.

Dr. Ram is a respected Ayurvedic Physician in the community, both locally and throughout the region, and internationally. The entire team at The Healing Gardens is known for their thoughtful and graceful way of conducting business and caring for clients.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Healing Gardens of Ayurveda – what should we know?
We are a full service ayurvedic clinic and wellness center, offering holistic care for prevention as well as therapies for chronic conditions.

We also specialize in detox and cleansing programs, with great success for our clients. Ayurveda is the ancient system of well-being from the Indian Subcontinent and has been in practice for more than 5000 years. However, it is an ever-evolving science that is as relevant and effective today, as it was 5000 years ago.

We have an amazing team that includes an Ayurvedic Physician (Dr. Ram Tamang), skilled practitioners, all with a combined experience of more than 30 years.

The way we care for our clients is very customized and individualized – from the oils used for body therapies, the yoga, meditation and breathing practices we teach, the diet and lifestyle practices we suggest, and of course the herbal formulations we prepare.

They are all customized for each individual to assist them on their journey to wellness and balance.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I think all of us at the Healing Gardens are doing what we do because we love it. We care about people, we care about holistic wellbeing, we care about the planet. So, compassion, true care for people’s wellbeing is what are offer, and our clients experience just that. The results really speak for themselves.
