Meet Dr. Payam Tizabgar of SMC Pharmacy in Santa Monica

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Payam Tizabgar.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Dr. Payam. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I received my Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Roseman University in Henderson, Nevada in 2005. I moved back to Los Angeles shortly after and became a manager for one of the busiest chain pharmacies in Southern California. There were days I felt bad for the customers who were walking into my store because the employees could not give them the customer service they deserved. I knew that if I were to open a pharmacy I would want to make sure my customers were taken care of properly. A few years ago I opened SMC Pharmacy in Santa Monica and have been working towards customer service ever since.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
With any business venture there will always be struggles. I find that insurance companies are always trying to steer people away from small businesses and into either chain pharmacies or mail order pharmacies.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
SMC Pharmacy is a retail pharmacy that specializes in compounds for customized medication. We work with doctors’ offices as well as manufactures to lower the cost of your copay by using rebate cards whenever applicable. Our staff is trained on Medication Syncing – where you receive all your medications at the same time every month. Our pharmacists have begun a Medication Therapy Management program that optimizes drug therapy outcomes by going over patient profiles and discussing potential drug interactions. SMC Pharmacy has become a full service pharmacy catering to patient’s needs.

What were you like growing up?
I always had an interest in business. Growing up my dad had a business of his own and I would help him whenever possible. He taught me a lot and I owe a lot of my success to him.
