Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Mimi Shagaga.
Dr. Shagaga, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I originally moved from the Midwest to Los Angeles to pursue a career on the business side of the music industry. After becoming immersed in the industry, eventually I fell into the world of business consulting. For several years I enjoyed consulting work because it allowed me to work with various industries on different projects. That being said, in the back of my mind I continually felt that something was missing. I always had an interest in psychology and looking back I now realize that in my business experiences quite often I drew intuitively upon my knowledge of human and business psychology.
After a lot of contemplation, I made the decision to go back to school to pursue a career as a psychologist. It has been such a fascinating and fulfilling journey for me and I thoroughly enjoy working in private practice. I believe that my background in the world of business has given me a unique perspective when working with clients and particularly working in a private practice setting. It is an honor and a privilege to be allowed into the lives of the individuals, couples and families that come to see me. I am incredibly passionate about helping others and I am confident that it is evident in my work with clients.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I would not say it was a smooth road getting to where I am now. Anyone who has attended graduate school is well aware of the challenges that arise along the way whether they are mental, physical or financial. After having a career for many years, it was not an easy decision to make to go back to being a student. However, being that I put myself through school at the undergraduate level, I believe I had even more of an appreciation of what that decision meant. Seeking licensure as a clinical psychologist required several years of school, research and countless clinical hours. During that time, I had to make several sacrifices but I can honestly say I have no regrets. Being in private practice also presents its own set of unique challenges which I felt well equipped to face.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am a licensed clinical psychologist working in private practice. I see a wide range of individuals and couples dealing with a variety of issues ranging from relationship issues to addiction issues. I have conducted research and presented on the topics of addiction which by default has become one of my areas of focus. In addition to working with issues of substance abuse and addiction, I do a lot of work with sex addiction. In my practice, I provide psychotherapeutic services and specialize in conducting psychological and neuropsychological assessments. I have often heard from clients who have been in therapy before that I am quite different from other therapists they have seen. I believe that has a lot to do with my upbringing and background. I often incorporate humor in my approach and have been told that I am “not a typical shrink” in a complimentary way.
