Meet Dr. Kristie Overstreet of Therapy Department in Huntington Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Kristie Overstreet.

Dr. Overstreet, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am living proof that pain can lead to opportunity. I dropped out of medical school after spending all of my high school and college years working towards my goal to become a physician. When I made the decision to leave medical school, I knew that my life would be heading in a different direction, but I had no idea where I would end up.

After school, I worked for the Georgia Department of Children and Family Services as a child abuse investigator. It was at this time, I met a therapist for the first time. I knew instantly, this is what I am supposed to do with my life. I enrolled in a master’s program, worked full time, and began my career as a therapist. Over the years, I found my work with the LGBTQIA community and relationships very rewarding. I found that I could easily talk about the difficult and hard topics around sex that many people wanted to avoid. I knew I needed specific training so I went back to school and became a Certified Sex Therapist. I then began to pursue my dream of completing my doctorate in Clinical Sexology.

I have been working in the clinical field for the past eleven years helping individuals and couples improve their relationship with themselves and others.

I am very grateful that this career found me. The pain I experienced with leaving my dream of becoming a physician gave me an incredible opportunity to find my amazing career as a therapist.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I have faced many obstacles and challenges through my career and owning a business.

Please tell us about Therapy Department.
I opened Therapy Department in 2012 in Jacksonville, Florida and relocated to Huntington Beach, CA in December 2016. Therapy Department is a counseling and consulting practice that specializes in sex therapy, relationships, and transgender identities. In this practice, I work with individual, couples, and families that are navigating difficulties in their lives. My specialties include relationship issues, LGBTQIA issues, desire discrepancies, healing after affairs, sexual dysfunction, fetishes, kink, BDSM, and polyamory.

I also work with businesses, companies, schools, and universities in the areas of leadership, motivation, relationship enhancement, and LGBTQIA diversity. I enjoy working with clinicians, therapist, social workers, and psychologist to help them make their practice profitable.

I am most proud of creating the Transgender Healthcare Dignity Model training and certification program. I created this program this year to train healthcare providers on how to care for transgender, gender-affirming, and gender non-binary patients from a dignity perspective. The majority of healthcare providers (doctors, nurses, physical therapist, occupational therapist, social workers, counselors, therapist, and human resources) do not receive training on how to provide the best care for the transgender community. This training offered on-site or online teaches providers how to interact, care for, and feel more confident in working with the transgender community.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I wouldn’t change anything. I have learned from my mistakes and the obstacles I have faced. If things were different, I wouldn’t have learned the very important life lessons along the way.
