Meet Dr. Gary Motykie of Dr. Motykie Plastic Surgery and Med Spa in West Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Gary Motykie.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Dr. Gary. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My interest in the form and function of the human body began early – I was a fitness competitor and personal trainer. I eventually earned my undergraduate degree in Bio-Medical Engineering, during which I was involved in the development of artificial organs and prosthetic limbs – however, it wasn’t as creative as I had thought, and I didn’t enjoy being in the lab away from people. After graduating, I began studying Medicine at Northwestern University and Plastic Surgery at the University of Texas, where I performed surgery at one of the world’s top cancer and burn reconstruction facilities. It was at there that I was exposed to the aesthetic realm that I realized I could have a lasting impact on people’s lives. I find fulfillment in plastic surgery – it’s not as superficial as some people project. Over fifty percent of my patients are revisions or reconstructions, which means I can provide people with potential confidence; they never thought they may have.

All of this experience has led me to my most recent passion, which is stem cell therapy. We’re using stem cells to regenerate the skin and give people a natural, long-lasting, youthful feel and appearance.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I don’t want it to sound like I was an overnight success, because I wasn’t, but I was asked to appear on E’s Dr. 90210 shortly after I had accepted my fellowship in Beverly Hills. Of course, I wasn’t expecting to land on a television show, so my career was somewhat fast-tracked. The show opened so many doors for me; I began meeting patients from across the world and performing complicated (emphasize complicated) revision cases because that is what the producers wanted to showcase on Dr. 90210. That may sound like it was an easy ride, but it really wasn’t – I was kind of thrown to the wolves, dealing with publicity and everything that comes with publicity.

With that said, I feel like I have finally settled into myself and my practice. Having completed so many stressful revisions on Dr. 90210 makes me totally confident with the cases I encounter now – I’m never afraid to take on a case.

Dr. Motykie Plastic Surgery and Med Spa – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
There are two sides to my business – Dr. Motykie Plastic Surgery and Motykie Med Spa. I would say I am most known for rhinoplasties and correcting (prior) surgeries from other surgeons, but I do a great deal of liposuction, breast augmentation, Brazilian butt lifts, etc. I am most proud of my revisions and the confidence my work can instill in people. Soon I hope to be known for my work with stem cells, which will not only enhance the body’s natural ability to heal but also regenerate the skin – building volume where volume is desired and reducing wrinkles due to soft tissue loss.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success in two ways – personal and patient. Personal success is coming into work and being happy and excited about what I get to do every day. Patient success is much more complex. Patient’s biggest fears are not wanting to look “worse” or “weird,” which is why it is so important for myself, and other surgeons, to abide by the first rule of plastic surgery: create beauty based on patient expectations, not the surgeon’s expectations. I have found that I can ease patient fear by providing “Motykie Morphs,” which are digitally altered images of the results the patient can expect.
