Meet Dr. Barbara Young of BJY Enterprises in Riverside County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Barbara Young.

Dr. Young, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My story began in Muskogee, Oklahoma and at the age of 15, I entered college and stopped out at age 17 to get married. I ended up at age 19 with two babies and a husband who decided he no longer wanted to be married. For years, I felt like a failure and wandered, inching along each day with a job as a secretary at the University of California. I married again at age 25, only to have made a second mistake and after 11 years divorced, now with three children, one of whom was a special need child (juvenile diabetic).

After lengthy soul-searching, I returned to college at now age 36 to complete what I had started at age 15. I merely wanted to receive my BA degree but ended up staying in school for seven years receiving a bachelor’s degree in social psychology and masters in counseling all with a 4.0 GPA. I later returned to college to acquire a Ph.D. at age 49 and received it in three years at age 51 from the University of Southern California. I was a woman on a mission and in a hurry!

I have had many experiences, the good and the bad, but most importantly, I chose to be better and not bitter (which became my mantra). I chose to be a class act woman; I chose to be my own best cheerleader; I chose to be a breath of fresh air rather than a breath of despair; I chose to be a victor rather than a victim. As I began to emerge in my career, I had a meteoric rise and after hard work and many years of miserable bosses, insufferable men, false friends, trials and desert experiences, I emerged as a beautiful butterfly ready to spread her wings.

I have had a very successful career that spans more than 40 years in higher education, working my way up from a Secretary to a College President to becoming the first African American female system-wide dean in a university headquarters which is the largest in the United States. I also served as a University Adjunct Professor at one of Los Angeles’ local campuses for 14 years. In 2000, I chose to re-career at age 62, and a new journey began.

I took a leap of faith and a dream in February 2003. I launched my company, Young Enterprises, which is now BJY Enterprises, Inc. to provide life-growth development seminars tailored for women. In May of 2003, I was invited to Kenya, where I implemented a weekend Leadership Retreat with members of the Kenyan Parliament other fortunes 500 CEO’s. This led to my international leadership and speaking tours for both men and women in several countries in the continent of Africa and implementing my life-growth seminars in the US until 2015.

II also served concurrently while traveling aboard for 12 years as the Consultant to the California State University Chancellor years implementing its California State University African Initiative with African American Churches throughout California in partnership with its 23 campuses.

Today, through many miracles, I became a Radio Talk Show host, first with Inner light Radio and later LA Talk Radio and in 2014, I became a radio talk show host with Voice America that has approximately 3 ½ million listeners a month and in 122 countries through my show, Transformation for Success. I interview individuals from all walks of life and professions in Television, Business, Entertainment, Technology, Authors, Coaches, and Sports figures who share their stories of transformation and strategies that lead to success for the listeners.

In 2015, I was invited to launch my own Television Channel (Transformation Success TV) with the Voice America TV platform and am producing and hosting my online show, THE TOTAL WOMAN, on my TV Channel with three co-hosts, where we interview a range of interesting guests, and we discuss engaging subjects and topics of interest for our national and international viewers. My network currently has recently acquired two additional shows on my network: the Ana Delgadillo Show and the Millennial Money Minute with Caitlin Chen.

I have been honored to be award the 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award of Excellence from President Barack Obama, the 2018 Trailblazer’s Award from the New Frontier Democratic Club and the Women of Achievement Award from the Los Angeles- African American Public Policy Institute of which I teach public policy and leadership. I have served on numerous boards that include the Respiratory Care Board of California, the National Respiratory Care Board, the National Institute of Minority Medicine, Leadership AMERICA, the National Sports and Conditioning Board, the Long Beach Goodwill Board, and the West Angeles Church of God in Christ Board of Directors and the South Coast Environmental Justice Board.

My greatest passion has been to empower and transform the lives of individuals for greater success and to walk into their purpose. My book, “Dancing on Broken Legs: Journey of a D.I.V.A. (Divinely Inspired, Victorious With Authority) is now in Barnes and Noble and Amazon. Release in July 2017.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My earliest struggles were 1) recapturing my self-esteem and loving myself, 2) practicing the art of forgiveness with my stepdad, my mom and my first and second husbands who had contributed to my low self-esteem.

I struggled as a single mom to raise two small children against all odds and met with success, learning that I had the inner strength to survive with hard work, patience, and perseverance. I chose to be better and not bitter, which became my “mantra.”

I had a special “needs child who at age 8 was diagnosed with diabetes and who later died from the complications of diabetes. Losing a child is one of the hardest challenges I had to face and overcome. Through my pain, came the preparation for my purpose.

Please tell us about BJY Enterprises, Inc..
BJY Enterprises, Inc., is a multi-faceted company designed to empower and transform the lives of individuals through coaching, mentoring, consulting and through the use of media –online radio and television locally, nationally and internationally.

I am known as the Transformation Expert and have traveled in the continent of Africa working with world leaders, CEO’s and professional women to change their lives personally and professionally to greater success and to walk in their purpose. I am must proud that customers and friends alike see my company as one with a President/CEO of integrity, one that maintains a consistently high level of professionalism among its staff and maintains a high degree of customer satisfaction with a personal touch that gets the job done.

What sets me apart from others is the company’s media outreach to a global audience of 3 million via television and radio integrated with topics on current and global issues with exposure to expert guests who share their successful business, health, empowerment, and wellness strategies.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
This question is posed to me often, and I have to share basically nothing, as each of my experiences has brought me greater victories. I learned to spend my valuable time looking in the windshield mirror rather looking backward in the rearview window which is very small.
