Meet Dr. Anastasia and Dr. James Lander of Lander Chiropractic in Brea

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Anastasia and Dr. James Lander.

Dr. Anastasia and Dr. James, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
We met in chiropractic school. We were best friends for years before we even dated. Once we got married we shared the same vision for health that we wanted to offer patients. Initially, we worked at different doctor’s offices as independent contractors, then we started renting a room from another chiropractor but eventually we outgrew the space.

We have to admit, it was really scary taking that leap and signing a lease for our own space three years ago. However, it was one of the best decisions we ever made (other than getting married of course!). In the three years, we have added an acupuncturist, three massage therapists, and a holistic nutritional therapist. Our approach to health is – let’s figure out what is going on with the patient – find the root of the issue. We don’t consider our patients just patients, they are part of the Lander Chiropractic community.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely has not been a smooth road. There are so many struggles. Initially it was how do we get patients, then it was how do we keep up with patients while now having a staff to oversee and trying to have a personal life. Finding balance has always been something that we have to focus on with being married and business partners.

Also, as new business owners there are so many decisions to make. One of our biggest regrets were the high costs that we had initially as it took a while to actually make a profit. When we were independent contractors at other offices, we went in, treated patients and went home. As business owners, everything changes. Everything is personal. Not only are we treating patients, but we have to make sure that all aspects of the patient experience is the best it can be. We accept most major insurances in our office, therefore, there is a huge billing component.

Please tell us about Lander Chiropractic.
Lander Chiropractic is a wellness clinic. We offer not only chiropractic, but also acupuncture, massage therapy and holistic nutritional therapy as well. We specialize in treating women during pregnancy (both of us are Webster Certified), kids of all ages (starting just hours after birth!), and athletes as well. My husband is a humble man but I am super proud of him. He has been an elite runner for most of his adult life. In the past year he hasn’t competed, but he still runs more than 80 miles a week. When runners and athletes come in with injuries, not only does he recognize the injury almost instantly; he can identify with the distress over not being able to participate in a sport or activity you love. His goal is to get to the root of the issue and get our patients back to doing the things they love – symptom free.

If my wife is going to brag about me, I guess it is my turn to brag about her. My wife is super passionate with all our patients. It is inspiring to see. Many call her the baby whisperer. We have parents that come in exhausted with colicky babies and walk about with a happy, calm baby. It is amazing!

There are many things we are proud of at our office. Like we mentioned before, our focus is the patient’s health and wellbeing. With all the therapies that we offer at the office, we aim to find what does the patient need and take it from there.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
For me (Dr. James) it would be summers at the beach in New Hampshire. My family would always go for one week where we would barbecue, hang out on the boardwalk, and play at the beach. All of these were something I looked forward to during the harsh winters of Eerie, Pennsylvania.

For me (Dr. Anastasia) it would be anytime I got to go back to Puerto Rico. I love the ocean but there is nothing like going back to my island, Puerto Rico. Once my family moved from Puerto Rico to New York our visits back became less frequent. My favorite memories include playing in the ocean with my siblings, smelling the delicious aromas of fresh caught fish being grilled, and listening to my family singing old folk songs of the island.
