Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Adam Sheck.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Dr. Adam. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have been in practice as a Clinical Psychologist, Couples Counselor and Sex Therapist for over 25 years. My first career was in engineering and computers. Equipped with a degree from MIT, I was quite successful, yet found it (and my life) unfulfilling. After beginning my own personal psychotherapy, I chose a new path. I returned to graduate school in my early 30’s to complete my doctorate in Clinical Psychology and subsequently earned my license as a Clinical Psychologist.
My unique strength comes from combining my analytic, scientifically-trained mind with emotional intelligence and deep empathy. This makes my skill sets quite unique in the field of psychotherapy and counseling.
My curiosity and desire for my own healing drives me to learn more and more about myself as well as how to be more effective in my work. In addition to studying conventional psychotherapy, I have personally and professionally explored meditation, tantra practices, hypnotherapy and somatic psychotherapies. I am grateful to my many teachers and mentors along the way.
A fan of the belief that “we teach what we need to learn” I was also a Professor in graduate programs in Marriage and Family Therapy as well as been Director of Psychology Training at a major Los Angeles Community Health Center. I found that this helped balance the isolation of a private practice.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No one enters the field of psychotherapy and counseling because they have a smooth road! I have had many bumps along the way, although I am proud to have successfully survive my own childhood 🙂
As an adult, in addition to changing careers, I ended my own unhealthy marriage to a person with severe issues. That was what initially caused me to enter my own personal psychotherapy. I also lost a child and had another child who is now a successful adult. My many life experiences both happy and sad, have contributed to who I am today, personally and professionally.
My 25+ years of experience in the field and 50+ years of life have shaped me and my work with people. I understand loss and pain from the inside out. I walk my talk. As a result, I have more compassion, more empathy and more capacity to join more deeply emotionally in supporting others. I am willing to challenge when confrontation is necessary, yet it is softened by care and concern.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with The Passion Doctor – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Helping others connect to their feelings and deeper truth has been deeply satisfying. My reputation as the “Passion Doctor” came early in my career. I discovered I had a gift for supporting long-term, committed couples reigniting their romance, their intimacy, their sexuality and their passion.
Of course, passion is so much more than sexuality. It comes from being true to ourselves, from having our inner life match our outer life. Better sex and better relationships are a result of coming from that place of authenticity.
My work with singles is to help them to discover their “relationship blueprint” in order to understand themselves more and heal the wounds of childhood, so that they may attract and maintain healthier relationships. And I continue to support couples in overcoming relationship challenges including communication issue, conflict, trust issues and betrayals, in order to find a way to reconnect and hopefully to bring back the passion.
In addition, I created the Los Angeles Counseling Center, where I currently supervise four psychotherapy interns who are working towards licensure. This allows us to provide more affordable treatment to those who truly want to help themselves. I am truly proud of that accomplishment and mentoring others into this helping profession.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Currently, I am working on two books, one for couples titled “Bring Back The Passion!” and one for everyone, about connecting and living our life purpose called, “The Secret To Owning Your Mission!”
In addition to my private practice in Los Angeles, I am working more and more by telephone and video with people nationwide and worldwide and wish to expand this and connect and support more people, without regard for geographical limitations. In my face-to-face work, I am hoping to involve my rescue dog, Sachi, more and more, as a “co-therapist” and allow her loving, unconditional presence to provide a deeper level of healing.
I am putting together two live workshops, based upon the two books in progress and am planning to launch them by the summer of 2017.
Truly, I am grateful and excited that my life is filled with so many opportunities to make a difference!
