Meet Downtown Photographer: Gonzalo Guerrero

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gonzalo Guerrero.

Gonzalo, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My start in photography began in 1983 upon graduating high school when I purchased my first 35mm film camera. Attended community college and a photography school where you learn photography 101 as well as the digital process when the transition was made from film to digital. The real world learning comes from merging the technical side of photography with the creative side. Today I work with models from amateurs to experienced in portfolio building. I do sports photography as well and travel/landscape photography under the business name of G GUERRERO PHOTOGRAPHY

Has it been a smooth road?
No, the road was and is not easy, proving to clients that you’re capable of producing quality work for them was a struggle in the beginning. Thankful to the many models who took a chance with me early on in my journey. One current struggle is the surge of “photographers” that emerge giving away their photography work or do it dirt cheap making it difficult to operate a business when the seed of “free work” is embedded. I get contacted by people seeking free shoots.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and career?
In addition to knowing my craft, photography, luck has plenty to do with the work and clients I get. I’ve been at the right place at the right time with some clients that 10 years later I still do work for them.

Is there a quality or characteristic that has played an outsized role in your success?
Quality work is important to the survival of my business just like respect and professionalism. A client feels at ease when they see and feel that a photoshoot and/or pre-shoot meeting is handled in a professional manner.

What do you love about our city and what do you dislike?
Our city has incredible locations to carry out my work in terms of location shoots. We have a diversity of cultures throughout the city that choosing a theme and location is not a problem. What I like least about our city is the amount of trash around our streets and alleys and the growing homeless issue making our city of Angels seem uninviting and a let down to outside visitors.
