Meet Downtown Makeup Artist: Calvin Dexter

Today we’d like to introduce you to Calvin Dexter.

Calvin started working in the fashion industry at age 15 and never thought he would be a makeup artist.  He was doing well, rising in position and experience and thought that fashion is where he would be spending his entire career when suddenly, at 27 he had to stop working for about a year to take care of his sick grandmother.  When it was time for him to go back to work he realized his heart wasn’t really in fashion anymore.  It’s where he had spent his entire career and so he had no idea what he would do next – he thought about everything from hospitality to retail.  Then one of his friends convinced him to try out for a position at MAC.  Keep in mind, Calvin did not know how to do makeup and didn’t even know whether makeup was what he wanted to do and now he was going to try out for a highly coveted, competitive and hard to get position with one of the most prestigious companies in the industry.

When he arrived at the interview, a woman looked at his resume and asked him, point-blank, “what are you doing here?”  After that initial hiccup, he went on to dominate his interview and trials and was hired by MAC.  He didn’t get much training, they just threw him in the water and expected him to swim and his talent, determination and professionalism allowed him to thrive within MAC.  Calvin has nothing but great things to say about his time at MAC, exclaiming “MAC changed my life, it made me reevaluate everything.”

Now a few years, Calvin has laid the foundation for an incredible career in makeup within LA.  He has a long way to go, but after getting to know him we are more than confident that he will reach the pinnacle of the field in no time.
