Meet Downtown LA Photographer and Retoucher: Joyce Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joyce Park.

Joyce, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I fell in love with photography at the early age of 12, when my father handed me one of his vintage cameras. I took my first photograph, and I was hooked. I learned that life behind a camera lens opens the world to so much more detail and beauty than we see with the naked eye. I knew that photography was going to be a big part of my life.

I studied the arts at the University of Washington and graduated with a BFA in photography in 2004. After graduating, I moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in photography because there was so much more opportunity in the city. I was very fortunate to find a job opening at SlickforceStudio and work with international famed photographer Nick Saglimbeni. I’ve been working with Nick for over 9 years and have had the opportunity to work with many high-profile clients and celebrities including Kevin Hart, Kim Kardashian and Kris Jenner.

Has it been a smooth road?
I think I was very lucky. Before graduating from University, I was scouted to work for a portrait studio in Southern California so I already had a job lined up in my profession upon graduating. I worked at a wedding and portrait studio for 2 years but then decided shooting family portraits and weddings were becoming monotonous and wanted to do something more creative. So I quit and went back to school, but it didn’t last because I felt I already had all the skills needed I just needed to find somewhere that could put my skills to use. I was browsing Craigslist for photography related jobs and SlickforceStudio caught my eye. It was a match made in Heaven and I’ve been working with them ever since. Through the studio, I’ve learned so much about post-production and large-scale photo shoots that I don’t think I could’ve learned anywhere else.

Has there been people or an institution that has played a pivotal role in your career?
I definitely believe working at Slickforce Studio has shaped my career. In my early days, I was photographing children, families, and events, but Slickforce opened up the entertainment, commercial and fashion industry to me. I learned a great deal behind the scenes about the business of photography and marketing and the importance of customer service in every career position.

What kind of work do you look forward to most?
I’m always open to new projects. I never turn down a project unless it’s something against my morals. I look forward to working with people who have creative ideas and have a passion for their project.

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you were just starting out?
I wouldn’t change a thing.
