Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Briscoe.
Joseph Rene Briscoe was born and raised on an island in Texas and knew from a very early age that he wanted to be a photographer. In 2003, he packed up and moved out west to Santa Barbara, where he attended Brooks Institute of Photography, before moving to Los Angeles in 2006. He has assisted many prominent photographers in the business, including Mark Seliger, Kenneth Willardt, and David LaChappelle. Loving nothing more than having a camera in hand, Joe currently shoots with a number of different clients throughout the advertising and fashion industry. Joe resides in Los Angeles with his wife Haven, their dog Roscoe and their cat Cow. He loves street tacos and misses film.
Has it been a smooth road?
My father was a radiator repairman and I learned really quickly that I didn’t want to work on cars my whole life. But, he did teach me that I needed to find what I love and find out how to make money doing it. So, photography was what I discovered to be my outlet. I fell in love with the darkroom when I was eighteen years old, then realized that there was so much more beyond the prints and chemicals… Creating a lucrative career from a creative dream is always a challenge.
So, what should we be on the lookout for, what’s next in store for you?
I have a few personal projects I’m currently working on. As well as relaunching my website in the new year.
Let’s explore some of the challenges you’ve faced along the way. What was the most difficult part of your career so far?
Within the first few months of moving to California from Texas, to pursue my goal to become a professional photographer, my father passed away. The hardest decision to make was whether to stay and continue my path towards my career or to move back home and go into a different field altogether.
What about “Wow-moments” – any moments that stick out? Any moments when you felt like you had made it?
After living in LA for years as an industry professional, then traveling to places like Indonesia and Singapore for work, I really felt a sense of accomplishment with my career.
