Meet DTLA Fashion District Boudoir Photographer: Jennifer Lynn Roberts

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Lynn Roberts.

Jennifer Lynn, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
It all started growing up in the Midwest when I was a kid and found my parents cameras with flash bulb cubes. I was addicted to setting those flash bulbs off. My mother a talented artist and my father a blues guitarist who were both great armature photographers taught me photography and I started winning blue ribbons showing my work at the County Fair at nine years old. I took photography classes through school but was in a fine art program and did not know anything about lighting. Just before graduation I enrolled in school at Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara where I specialized in portraiture and fashion. After graduation I moved to Marina Del Rey, LA and opened a studio in the Los Angeles Fashion District. I shoot glamour and boudoir because many women do not take the time to pamper themselves. They are so busy taking care of their families that they do not take time for themselves. I love helping peel back the layers and showing women their true beauty!

Has it been a smooth road?
Brooks Institute of Photography is one of the hardest schools in the country with 80% of students dropping out the first year. It was extremely challenging to get through but I made it thanks to caring from my teachers and hard work.

What are your plans for the future?
I’m in the process of opening a studio which will be solely mine and dedicated to boudoir in the LA Fashion District and ready for business on September 15th.

Let’s explore some of the challenges you’ve faced along the way. What was the most difficult part of your career so far?
The hardest time in my life was when I was in school at Brooks. I had already gone through three years of art school for photography and had been the president of the photo club. I thought that I knew photography. Then coming into Brooks everything was so technical and I realized I did not know anything! Plus being in a new city with no connections trying to set up shoots for class made me go outside my comfort zone. Approaching business owners was terrifying for me. In retrospect I’m so glad I went through this experience because it gave me confidence and made me feel empowered.

Do you ever feel like “Wow, I’ve arrived” or “I’ve made it” or do you feel like the bulk of the story is still unwritten?
When I was on a shoot with a curvy model who herself had just lost 100 pounds. She was so nervous in the start of the shoot and very unsure of herself. On the first pose I showed her an image on the back of my camera to loosen her up. She was overwhelmed and started crying because she had never seen herself in that way. I was able to show her what the rest of the world sees and it was a very proud moment for both of us!
