Meet Downtown Hairstylist: Crystal Gomez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystal Gomez.  She’s been through a lot of ups and downs, but her resilience is beyond impressive.  She has never let go of her passion, she continues to charge on and inevitably success has started to flow her way.  Her story of hard work and passion are truly inspiring.

Crystal, please share your story with us.  How did you get to where you are today?

I’ve always had a passion for hair ever since I could remember. My senior year of high school I decided I wanted to go to cosmetology school once graduating, even though my parents weren’t too happy with my decision since they considered it more of a hobby than a carrier. Soon after finishing beauty school and becoming a licensed cosmetologist I was an assistant for a few years at a few salons then decided to start building my own clientele which wasn’t as easy as I thought. They were times that I would only make $100 dollars a month and days where I would get discouraged and wanted to quit, but I never gave up! Little by little I started building my clientele and posting before and after pictures on social media and getting referrals threw other clients. I started off by becoming a commission hairstylist then renting my own chair and now I have my own little studio at sola salon in West Covina.

What are your plans for the future?

My plans for the future is of course to keep on bettering myself with my education you could never know enough about hair. The hair industry is always coming out with new hair trends so of course keep educating myself. I would also like to eventually become a brand educator and teach other stylist about new hair trends and products. I would also like to expand my studio in the near future.  The hardest time of my career I would have to say was building my clientele. A lot of people think you get your license and you start making money right away! There were times when I would only make 100 dollars a month! Also times where I would see other hairstylist busy and I would have to assist them to make extra cash because I didn’t really have clients, which of course was really discouraging, at times I wanted to quit but I never gave up I started off assisting at a few salons than got tired of assisting bc I knew it was time for me to be on my own so I became a commission hairstylist for a year then switched to renting a chair and now I’m an owner of a studio. I never gave up because I knew I wanted this! I’ve always had a passion for hair and no matter how hard it was and how discouraged I would get I knew I would be where I wanted to be if I didn’t give up.

  • I’m pretty reasonable with my prices, I try not to be too pricy and make sure that once they leave my chair they are satisfied with my service and price.
